More than 45,000 people have died in Hungary of coronavirus-related diseases since the outbreak in the spring of 2020, according to official government figures. Is it a lot? Of course, it's a devastatingly high figure. Is it a lot in global terms? Yes, Hungary is fourth (or third, if you disregard Bosnia and Herzegovina with a population one third of Hungary's own) in the world in terms of Covid deaths per one million population.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had once said "the breakup of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical tragedy of the 20th century." On 24 February, he ordered Russian troops into eastern Ukraine on a "peace-keeping" mission, which has quickly turned into an all-out invasion of the country, with indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas and the shelling of Europe's largest nuclear plant. If he really longs for the 'good ole' days' and wants to revive the Soviet Union, he is doing a good job. Western sanctions are crippling the Russian economy and global companies covering virtually every sector from finance, through shipping to social media and entertainment, are pulling out by the dozen.

The number of daily new confirmed COVID-19 cases keeps decreasing in Hungary, which suggests that the fifth wave in the coronavirus pandemic caused by the highly-congatious Omicron variant has peaked. As it takes time for the more important metrics to follow suit, it is no wonder that hospitalisations, the number of Covid patients on ventilator and deaths keep on rising.

Hungarian authorities diagnosed 14,890 people with SARS-CoV-2 over the past 24 hours, which marks a 54% day-on-day growth and a 89% rise over a week ago. It is also the highest number of daily new confirmed COVID-19 cases ever recorded in Hungary. As of 15 February 2022, regulations will be tightened in respect of Hungary's Immunity Certificates that were theoretically issued to everyone that has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and to about half a million people that gained immunity against COVID-19 via infection. Hungarian authorities diagnosed 10,265 people with COVID-19, and 178 people died of coronavirus-related diseases over the past 24 hours, the official government portal reported on Wednesday morning. 5,852 people with coronavirus infection are in hospital, with 565 of them on ventilator, which mark weekly increases of over 20% and a respective rise of 85% and 61% compared to two weeks ago. The load on Hungarian hospitals keeps on rising at a constantly high rate in the ‘fourth wave’ of the coronavirus pandemic. Over the past 14 days, the number of COVID-19 patients in hospital and on ventilator grew by 150% and 127%, respectively. Both increases are a lot higher than a year ago (123%, 89%). If ICU and ventilation capacities continue to be used at such an accelerating rate, Hungary’s health care system could hit a critical barrier very shortly, only within a few weeks.

Hungarian authorities diagnosed 6,804 people with COVID-19, the highest daily figure since early April, and 83 people died of coronavirus-related diseases over the past 24 hours. The number of new cases jumped 61% week-on-week, and there are currently 70% more people with SARS-CoV-2 in hospital and 59% more on ventilator than a week ago. 3,629 people with coronavirus infection are in hospital, with 366 of them on ventilator, which compares with 5,183 people in hospital and 378 on ventilator a year ago.
