The editorial is centred on "What's On", "Where to go" and "What to do". Returning to the very roots of Bali's tourism, we try to get tourists to revisit the beautiful and unique wonders of Bali: temples, palaces, galleries and museums before turning to parks, dining, welbeing & spa, shopping, surfing and more. Every issue is started with a "Welcome Dance", as is any major event in Bali, and we cl

ose with “Secret Bali”, taking you off the tourist trail into the villages, the traditions and the everyday life of Bali.

☂️ In Bali, even umbrellas come with philosophy, symbolism, and centuries of tradition attached to them! The tedung is far more than a decorative cultural ornament.

Used in temples, ceremonial processions, and sacred rituals, tedung symbolise protection and spiritual shelter, often standing beside shrines or shading holy artefacts during important ceremonies.

Their colours also carry meaning: black and white represent the Rwa Bhineda philosophy of balance, while red, black, and white are linked to Brahma, Vishnu, and Siwa.

Crafted by traditional undagi architects, each tedung follows sacred principles of harmony and proportion, where every colour, shape, and detail serves a symbolic purpose.

Space, land, materials, dimensions. According to traditional Balinese philosophy, these are not arbitrary components – balance must be kept even in the most mundane levels of being.

This is precisely why we have Asta Kosala Kosali. These are the principles that Balinese traditional architects (undagi) must follow in order keep the harmony in our built environments, the rules that help our world mirror that of the cosmos.

Our cultural contributor, Jean Couteau, explores this further in an article available on our website: https://www.nowbali.co.id/asta-kosala-kosali-ordering-space-mirroring-the-cosmos/

🌱 Today (23 May), the Balinese Hindu community celebrate Tumpek Uduh, also known as Tumpek Bubuh or Tumpek Wariga, where they pay homage to Sanghyang Sangkara, the God of plants.

It takes place exactly 25 days before the most important festival, Galungan, and this is no accident. By blessing the plants at this time, they ask them to be blooming, fertile and fruitful in time for the big ceremonies come Galungan Day.
