18 May 1538

James V of Scotland married Mary of Guise at St Andrews Cathedral in Fife.

The proxy wedding of James V & Mary of Guise was held on 9 May 1538 at the Château de Châteaudun. Some 2,000 Scottish lords & barons came from Scotland aboard a fleet of ships under Lord Maxwell to attend, with Lord Maxwell standing as proxy for James V. Mary departed from Le Havre on 10 June 1538, & landed in Scotland 6 days later at Crail in Fife.

She was formally received by the king at St Andrews a few days later amid pageants & plays performed in her honour, & James & Mary were married in person at St Andrews Cathedral on 18 June 1538.

James & Mary had two sons: James, Duke of Rothesay (born 22 May 1540 at St Andrews), & Robert (or Arthur), Duke of Albany (born & baptised on 12 April 1541); however, both died on 21 April 1541, when James was nearly one year old & Robert (or Arthur) was nine days old.

The third & last child of the union was a daughter, Mary (later Queen of Scots), who was born on 8 December 1542.

James V (10 April 1512 – 14 December 1542) was King of Scotland from 9 September 1513 until his death in 1542. He was crowned on 21 September 1513 at the age of seventeen months. James was the son of King James IV & Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII of England.

Mary of Guise (French: Marie de Guise; 22 November 1515 – 11 June 1560), also called Mary of Lorraine, was Queen of Scotland from 1538 until 1542, as the second wife of King James V.

20 May 794 – While visiting the royal Mercian court at Sutton Walls with a view to marrying princess Ælfthryth, King Æthelberht II of East Anglia is taken captive & beheaded.

Æthelberht (Old English: Æðelbrihte, ÆÞelberhte), also called Saint Ethelbert the King, was an eighth-century saint & a king of East Anglia, the Anglo-Saxon kingdom which today includes the English counties of Norfolk & Suffolk. Little is known of his reign, which may have begun in 779, according to later sources, & very few of the coins he issued have been discovered. It is known from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle that he was killed on the orders of Offa of Mercia in 794.

Æthelberht was locally canonised & became the focus of cults in East Anglia & at Hereford, where the shrine of the saintly king once existed. In the absence of known historical facts, mediaeval chroniclers provided their own details for his ancestry, life as king, & death at the hands of Offa. His feast day is 20 May. There are churches in Norfolk, Suffolk & the west of England dedicated to him, & he is a joint patron of Hereford Cathedral.

21 May 1662

King Charles II Married Catherine of Braganza.

On 23 June 1661, a marriage treaty was signed, Catherine's dowry securing to England Tangier (in North Africa) and the Seven islands of Bombay (the latter having a major influence on the development of the British Empire in India), together with trading privileges in Brazil and the East Indies, religious and commercial freedom in Portugal and two million Portuguese crowns (about £300,000); while Portugal obtained military and naval support against Spain and liberty of worship for Catherine.

Catherine journeyed from Portugal to Portsmouth on 13–14 May 1662, but was not visited by Charles there until 20 May. The next day the couple were married at Portsmouth in two ceremonies – a Catholic one conducted in secret, followed by a public Anglican service.

Catherine had three miscarriages and produced no heirs. Her husband kept many mistresses, most notably Barbara Palmer, whom Catherine was forced to accept as one of her Ladies of the Bedchamber. Charles fathered numerous illegitimate offspring by his mistresses whom he acknowledged.

👑 Catherine and Charles are credited with introducing the custom of drinking tea to the British court, which was common among the Portuguese nobility.

21 May 1471

King Henry VI 'died'

Henry VI was imprisoned in the Tower of London, where he died during the night of 21 May 1471. In all likelihood, Henry's opponents had kept him alive up to this point rather than leave the Lancasters with a far more formidable leader in Henry's son Edward. According to the 'Historie of the arrivall of Edward IV', an official chronicle favourable to Edward, Henry died of melancholy on hearing news of the Battle of Tewkesbury and his son's death.

It is widely suspected, however, that Edward IV, who was re-crowned the morning following Henry's death, had in fact ordered his murder.

Sir Thomas More's History of Richard III explicitly states that Richard killed Henry, an opinion he might have derived from Commynes' Memoir (ed. Blanchard, vol. I, page 204). Another contemporary source, Wakefield's Chronicle, gives the date of Henry's death as 23 May, on which date Richard is known to have been away from London.

King Henry VI was originally buried in Chertsey Abbey; then, in 1484, his body was moved to St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, by Richard III.
