Super macro is always a challenge, but tracking two subjects at once takes it to another level. These pygmy seahorses are no bigger than 1 cm, making every movement a test of patience. I spent quite a while watching this pair; the larger one kept headbutting its mate, almost as if it were trying to get them into position. I just had to wait for that split second where they both looked in the same direction to finally get the shot. I was able to get this shot with the help of the Nauticam SMC-3.

Inspired by mushrooms! 🍄
No, they aren't actually mushrooms—they're tunicates! But they immediately reminded me of a little underwater fairy land. To play on that magical vibe, I brought out a super fun lens: the Trioplan 100mm. It creates this crazy bubble bokeh that fits the enchanted forest look perfectly.

My old friend, the Coconut Octopus.

I had an absolute blast being back at running my macro workshop. Whenever I return here, I always hope to spend some time with one of my absolute favorite critters on Earth. The coconut octopus never disappoints—their intelligence and behavior are always incredible to witness.

If you want to take photos of these guys and dial in your macro skills, come join me in January for Capturing Critters 2027! Link in bio

Tidal Silhouettes

This past month, a few close friends and I challenged ourselves to push our creative visions and try something new. The assignment? Collaboration.

I teamed up with .keith for a land-to-sea experiment. Keith couldn't dive this time, so he captured these beautiful silhouettes of our model, .arts , on shore (thanks for being a great model). He then handed over the Nikon Z8, and I took his frames underwater to layer in the textures and light of the kelp forest.

These are all in-camera double exposures—no Photoshop, just a shared vision passed from land to water. So stoked with how they turned out and definitely ready to explore this technique more.

In just a couple of weeks, I’m headed back to my favorite place on the planet and my old home: Lembeh Strait.

I’m stoked to be running a workshop at , where we’ll be diving deep into the technical and creative side of how to make these bizarre critters really pop!

Save the Date:
If you want to level up your macro game with me, I’m returning to Lembeh Resort in January 2027 for the "Capturing Critters" workshop.

Spots always go fast, so start planning now!

Spent some time with these California Newts a few months back. While it looks like a protective cuddle, these California newts are actually in the middle of their complex mating ritual. That snail on the left is definitely up to something, too.

Probably my personal favorite frame from my time with this snapping turtle. Between the moss-covered armor and that ancient gaze, it felt like I was photographing a living relic from another era. What a cool subject to spend time with underwater.

It's a big world out there.
A different perspective. POV of my favorite prehistoric-looking critter in the springs: the common snapping turtle. Just a tiny, moss-crowned dinosaur taking in the glassy surface reflections of its underwater kingdom.
