Hey everyone! I just came across one of the wildest historical stories and had to share it here. We’ve all heard about ruthless rulers, but Olga of Kiev takes it to a whole new level.
Back in the 10th century, the Drevlian tribe brutally murdered her husband, Prince Igor. They thought they’d easily take over by forcing Olga into a political marriage. But they severely underestimated her.
Instead of playing the victim, Olga plotted a series of revenges that are honestly mind-blowing. First, she welcomed their ambassadors, carried them in their own wooden boat as a "tribute," and dumped them straight into a pre-dug trench to bury them alive. Next, she invited their top leaders to wash in her bathhouse before a meeting, locked the doors from the outside, and set it on fire.
But the wildest part? During her siege of their last fortress, Iskorosten, she didn't demand gold or silver. She asked for just three pigeons and three sparrows from each house. The Drevlians thought they got off easy. But that night, her soldiers tied sulfur matches to the birds' feet and released them. The birds flew straight back to their nests, and the entire city burned to the ground.
What makes this even crazier is what she did next. Out of the ashes of her enemies, she established the first tax system and administrative borders of the Rus, effectively turning loose tribes into a unified state. She even traveled to Constantinople, embraced Christianity, and secured alliances that shaped Eastern European culture for a thousand years. Today, she is actually recognized as a saint.
It makes you wonder: Was she a ruthless tyrant seeking personal vengeance, or a visionary leader who realized that blood was the only currency to buy a nation's survival? What do you guys think? Was her cruelty justified for the greater good?
