Motocross originated in the United Kingdom in the early 1900s. The sport evolved from motorcycle trials competitions, which became off-road events called scrambles.
Early years
The first official scramble was held in Camberley, Surrey in 1924.
The bikes used in competition were similar to those used on the road.
The FIM, the international governing body for motorcycling, established a European Championship in 1952.
Modern era
In the 1960s, two-stroke engine technology made four-stroke machines less competitive.
Japanese manufacturers began to challenge European factories for supremacy in motocross.
The FIM introduced a 125 cc world championship in 1975.
The sport has evolved over the years, with bikes becoming more powerful, tires improving, and tracks becoming more challenging.
Motocross today
The Vets Motocross of Nations (VMXON) is held every year at Farleigh Castle in Somerset.
The UK hosts a competitive ACU British Motocross Championship.
Many countries have adopted motocross, including Belgium and France.
