📷 The Lost City of Thonis-Heracleion – A Remarkable Underwater Discovery 🇪🇬🌊
In 2000, French archaeologist Franck Goddio made an extraordinary find while surveying the Mediterranean for 18th-century French warships. Off the coast of Egypt, he uncovered Thonis-Heracleion, an ancient city long thought to be a myth. 🏺✨
This once-thriving metropolis, known to both Egyptians and Greeks, had lain hidden beneath the waves for centuries, its secrets preserved by the sea. The underwater ruins revealed a wealth of treasures: 64 ships, 700 anchors, gold coins, colossal 16-foot statues, and the remains of a grand temple dedicated to the god Amun-Gereb. The remarkably well-preserved granite structures suggested a bustling port city, with canals crisscrossing the area, evoking images of a sunken Venice. 🌍
Thonis-Heracleion had been a vital hub of trade and culture, serving as a gateway to Egypt more than 2,000 years ago. Yet, its fate remains a mystery—why it sank beneath the Mediterranean is still unclear, adding an intriguing layer to this fascinating discovery.
This find is a powerful reminder of the incredible, often hidden, history beneath our feet—or in this case, beneath the waves. 🌊💀
