Not such a small step for a man! The ladder of the Lunar Module was a couple of feet short of the ground – and for good reason. There were shock absorbing structures within the landing legs. If the primary shock absorbing strut were maximally compressed by a hard landing, the lower end of the ladder would be directly above the foot pad, hence there had to be a gap at the bottom of the ladder to allow for this contingency. Here, Neil Armstrong is checking out the stretch in preparation for the mission. On the Moon, of course, the astronauts and their gear weighed six times less, so it was less of a task to hop off the bottom rung and back on again. Nevertheless, the first thing Armstrong did after stepping onto the Moon was to make sure he could get back up again.

his is a B&W photo from the Apollo 15 mission, taken on Aug. 3, 1971, during the third EVA on the Moon. It’s one of the best images of the umbrella-shaped high-gain antenna on the Lunar Roving Vehicle being pointed at Earth. Mission commander David Scott is carrying out the alignment with the help of the sighting scope. The high-gain antenna was used to transmit signals (as microwaves) from the rover’s TV camera to terrestrial receiving stations. The photo was taken by Lunar Module pilot Jim Irwin with a Hasselblad 70mm camera.
