Double delight for wrestling's gold Kawai sisters

Japan's Kawai sisters achieved their goal of both striking gold in women's wrestling. Kawai Risako won the freestyle 57-kilogram category on Thursday to match younger sister Yukako, who won 62-kilogram gold the day before.

Risako defeated Iryna Kurachkina of Belarus 5-to-zero in the final. Yukako cheered her sister on from the stands.

Afterwards, Risako said she worked hard for so long to win gold alongside her sister. She was competing in a lower weight class this time, after her first gold at 63-kilos in Rio.

In 2019, the 26-year-old defeated compatriot and four-time Olympic champion Icho Kaori to become the new face of the sport in Japan.

Coronavirus cases across Japan remain high

Health authorities across Japan confirmed 8,393 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday.

The figure includes 2,195 cases in Tokyo and in Kanagawa 1,686, which is a record high for the prefecture. Chiba reported 787 cases.

The health ministry said the number of severely ill coronavirus patients, who are on ventilators or in intensive care, was 704 as of Monday, up 13 from Sunday. The figure topped 700 for the first time since June 21.

Consumer sentiment in July improved for the second consecutive month, but only slightly.

The Consumer Attitude Index for July, which indicates consumers' willingness to shop, improved for the second consecutive month, up 0.1 points from the previous month. However, the increase in the index was only modest and is believed to have been affected by the rapid spread of the new coronavirus infection in Tokyo and other areas

The Consumer Attitude Index provides an index of consumer sentiment by asking 8,400 households nationwide how they expect to live over the next six months and whether it is time to buy cars and home appliances.

In the survey conducted from July 7 to 20, the index for households with two or more members stood at 37.5, up 0.1 points from the previous month and an improvement for the second consecutive month.

However, the increase in the index was only modest, and the Cabinet Office believes that the rapid spread of the new coronavirus infection, which led to the fourth emergency declaration in Tokyo, may have had an impact.

The Cabinet Office maintained its previous assessment of consumer sentiment, saying, "Although the situation remains severe, it is continuing to pick up.

The Cabinet Office said, "Future consumer confidence will depend not only on the spread of the infection but also on how much progress is being made in vaccination.

Consumer sentiment in July improved for the second consecutive month, but only slightly.

State of emergency expanded to 4 more prefectures

Japan's coronavirus state of emergency has taken effect in Osaka and three prefectures neighboring Tokyo due to a surge in new cases in those areas.
On Sunday, Tokyo confirmed 3,058 new coronavirus infections, while Kanagawa reported 1,258 cases, the third highest daily tally for the prefecture.
Saitama and Chiba confirmed 899 and 767 new cases, respectively. Both figures are the second highest on record for these prefectures.
The state of emergency that has been in place in Tokyo and Okinawa was expanded to include the three prefectures and Osaka on Monday.
Residents in these areas are urged to refrain from nonessential outings. Dining establishments are asked to close by 8 p.m. and not to sell alcohol.
Kanagawa Governor Kuroiwa Yuji said on Sunday that the number of new infections has been increasing despite the stricter anti-coronavirus measures that were already in place. He said that the surge in new cases reflects people's unwillingness to fully observe the measures.
Kuroiwa warned of a possible collapse of the medical system, saying that if people call an ambulance, it may not come, and even if it does, there would not be any hospital to accept the patients.
Saitama Governor Ono Motohiro said his prefecture is facing a critical situation where hospitals are becoming overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients and that could take a toll on other patients.
He stressed the need to step up support for medical institutions and public health centers.
The central government is also warning that the highly contagious Delta variant is creating more risks for the situation in Japan.
Health minister Tamura Norihisa has urged the public to avoid high-risk behaviors, and called for their understanding and cooperation.
The government is offering free PCR tests to people flying from Tokyo and Osaka to Hokkaido, Okinawa, and Fukuoka in an effort to put the virus under control.

Olympics-related COVID-19 cases on the rise

The organizers of the Tokyo Olympics reported 16 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday among people connected to the Games. That brings the total to 148 cases this month, including 16 athletes, and underscores the size of the challenge of keeping the world's biggest sporting event "safe and secure" in the midst of a pandemic.
Monday's new cases included three athletes from overseas, an official from abroad who is staying in the Olympic Village, six others who are not staying in the village and four contract workers living in Japan.

The men's golf event will now take place without two of its biggest stars. World number one Jon Rahm of Spain and sixth-ranked Bryson DeChambeau of the US were both forced to withdraw after failing PCR tests. Rahm was philosophical in response, tweeting on Sunday that playing in Tokyo could have given him a gold medal for his country but "unfortunately destiny had other plans." He said it was a great reminder that the world is still in a pandemic and needs to fight together to get through it.
