The Indonesian government officially launched its Blue Carbon Ecosystem Roadmap and Action Guidelines during the 30th UN Climate Change Conference ( ) in Belém, Brazil on last Monday, 17th Nov 2025. The document reinforces the integration of coastal and marine ecosystems into Indonesia’s Second Nationally Determined Contribution (SNDC), which forms the basis of the country’s renewed commitments on climate mitigation and adaptation.

With Brazil hosting and emphasizing the Amazon's biodiversity, blue carbon initiatives are gaining traction for their potential to sequester up to 7-10 times more carbon than terrestrial forests while enhancing coastal resilience. Discussions focus on restoration, integration into national climate plans (NDCs), carbon markets under Article 6, and community-led financing, amid calls for scaled-up investment in the Global South.

Program Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) dari Verra menyediakan metodologi untuk mengukur, melaporkan, dan memverifikasi (MRV) pengurangan emisi atau peningkatan penyerapan karbon melalui kegiatan mitigasi iklim. Metodologi ini disesuaikan per sektor, termasuk Energi, Pertanian, Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU), Limbah, Industri, dan Transportasi. Khusus metodologi VCS untuk Blue Carbon berbasis perubahan tutupan lahan, biomassa, dan dinamika karbon organik di sedimen pesisir, memiliki dua metodologi kunci yakni:
1. VM0033: Methodology for Tidal Wetland and Seagrass Restoration
2. VM0017: Methodology for Conservation of Coastal Wetlands

The Blue Carbon Group with National Council on Climate Change (DNPI) convened to discuss blue carbon in Indonesia's coastal ecosystems.

The Blue Carbon Group of the Marine and Fisheries R&D Agency and the Indonesian REDD+ Management Agency discussed Blue Carbon in Indonesia's coastal ecosystems. Representatives from the Ministry of Forestry and the National Council on Climate Change (DNPI) also attended the meeting. Topics discussed were: Blue Carbon for Blue Growth - Supporting Mangrove Management in Fisheries and Aquaculture Communities in Indonesia.
