This is an ongoing fight for the survival of a way of life.
Patagonia's "Cleanest Line" blog features an important interview with Lani and Jones Hotch, members of the Tlingit village of Klukwan, which translates to "eternal village". The Canadian Palmer Project is a direct threat the entire Chilkat Valley ecosystem and all of its inhabitants. Please give this a read and see why American Rivers named the Chilkat one of the top 10 most endangered rivers in 2019.

If you haven't seen our film, "Rock-Paper-Fish" that explores this incredible place, people, and story, check it out here: https://vimeo.com/319524936

Constantine Metal Resources is trying to move forward with plans to store waste from mining activities in massive ponds above the Chilkat River. Waste ponds like these have been the culprit in at least 2 of the most devastating mining accidents in history. Haines is pushing back. Watch the film at rockpaperfish.com and learn more about how you can support efforts to protect this vital watershed at chilkat.org

Klukwan is considered to be the capital of the Tlingit Nation, and it has sat on the banks of the Chilkat River in Alaska for thousands of years. Just this month, American Rivers named the Chilkat River one of the top 10 most endangered rivers in America. Constantine Metal Resources is operating a mineral exploration project in the peaks of the Chilkat Watershed, and any operational mistake could fundamentally change and damage this incredible ecosystem. Klukwan recently lost its lawsuit against the Bureau of Land Management for improper government to government consultation, and needs all of the support possible. Visit Chilkat.org to support Klukwan, and make a donation at https://www.gofundme.com/chilkat-fundraiser.

Thanks to Outside Magazine for highlighting this critical issue and our film, "Rock-Paper-Fish", produced with Wild Confluence, and with support from Peak Design and Patagonia!

Rock Paper Fish, from the filmmakers at Wild Confluence, takes viewers to southeast Alaska, where life is inseparable from the age-old rhythms of the Chilkat River. Every year all five species of Pacific salmon return to the Chilkat, drawing the world's largest gathering of bald eagles, grizzly....

A federal court just ruled against Klukwan and in a lawsuit against the Bureau of Land Management for improperly considering future impacts of mine development on the Chilkat River watershed.

"The ruling hinged on whether mineral exploration and mine development are inextricably linked. The court found that they are not because mineral exploration does not always lead to mine development."

It's an open question about whether the BLM properly considered of impacts if the project does become a mine.

Klukwan, Alaska from the sky and from the Chilkat River. Klukwan was settled thousands of years ago and is one of the longest continually inhabited communities on the continent. Last night, our film "Rock-Paper-Fish", which takes place in the Chilkat Valley, had its world premier here, and tonight the Haines community will come together to watch.
