A distinctive feature of Reog Ponorogo is the use of a large mask resembling a lion's head, known as the *Barong*, adorned with peacock feathers. The lead dancer, who wears this mask, displays remarkable physical strength by lifting the mask, which can weigh over 50 kg, using only their teeth. The performance often includes a cavalry of dancers (kuda lumping) and other characters that enrich the storyline. Reog Ponorogo is not only a form of entertainment but also deeply rooted in spiritual values and rituals within Javanese culture.
