Rusty was never the kind of cat that people stopped to admire. Born as the runt of an alley litter, he was a skinny ginger kitten with oversized ears and a permanently anxious look in his eyes. While his fluffy, energetic siblings were quickly adopted into warm homes, Rusty was taken in by a family who only did so out of a fleeting sense of obligation.
But pity rarely lasts.
To the family, Rusty quickly became an inconvenience. He wasn't the cuddly, playful pet they had envisioned. He was skittish, easily startled by loud noises, and his scrawny frame never seemed to fill out, no matter how little he ate. They stopped filling his food bowl regularly, and his ribs began to press sharply against his thin orange fur. He became invisible in his own home—never petted, never called by name, and always pushed away.
The Betrayal
One gloomy evening, the sky turned a heavy, bruised purple, signaling a severe storm. Instead of letting Rusty inside, the man of the house grabbed him roughly by the scruff of his neck. Rusty mewed softly, confused and trembling, as he was shoved into an old, crumpled cardboard box.
The car ride was long and silent. Rusty huddled in the corner of the dark box, his heart hammering against his ribs. He didn't know where they were going, but a deep, instinctual dread washed over him.
Finally, the car stopped. The door opened, and the box was carelessly dropped onto the wet dirt beside a patch of wild, thorny brambles far from the city.
"Good riddance," a cold voice muttered
The car door slammed shut. The engine roared to life, and the red taillights quickly vanished into the gathering darkness, leaving Rusty entirely alone.
Alone in the Dark
Moments later, the sky broke. A freezing, heavy downpour slammed into the earth. Within minutes, the fragile cardboard box soaked through and collapsed under the weight of the water.
Terrified and freezing, Rusty dragged himself out of the ruined cardboard and squeezed beneath the dense, thorny bushes for shelter. The sharp branches pricked his skin, but he was too numb to care. The mud splashed upward, caking his thin legs and matting his orange coat into heavy, wet clumps.
Shivering violently, Rusty tucked his paws beneath his chest and stared out at the empty, rain-slicked road. His wide, watery eyes reflected the cold, unforgiving storm. He didn't understand why he was there, nor what he had done wrong to be cast out into the dark. He could only sit in the mud, a heartbroken soul waiting for a kindness that might never come.
