What is in ship stability?

This rise /change in draft is called as Fresh water allowance FWA.

Summer draft + FWA = Freshwater draft.

If the vessel is loading in fresh water , She can load Upto fresh water draft. When the Vessel travels from FW to SW, She will rise and her draft at salt water will be summer draft.

FWA = W/(4 x TPC).
Where 'W' = Loaded SW displacement in tonnes.

Ship’s length (Bridge GPS antenna to fwd) + (How many shackles x 27.5m)

FOR Example :
= 8 shackle on deck and (bridge GPS antenna to fwd) is indicated by L = 160m
= 8 shackle +L
= 8×27.5m +160
= 380 m
= (380 / 1852 ) nm
= 0.2052 nm
= (0.2052 ×10) cable @ one NM is equal to 10 cable
= 2.052 cable

Note :
Centre of swinging circle is the point where anchor fluke touches SEABED.

Alternatively, The following is the formula used to calculate Swing Radius of a boat at anchor.:

Swing Radius = LOA + [ ( RODE ) 2 – ( DEPTH + FREEBOARD)2 ] 1/2

LOA: Overall length of the boat, including any additions or extensions from the stern

RODE: The length (line to the anchor) of the rode from the bow pulpit to the anchor.

DEPTH: The water depth over the anchor.
FREEBOARD: The distance from the deck at the bow pulpit to the water.

Note all measurements of length and distance must be in the same units. 👌

Deviation on any heading should be 5° or less.

: 2009 (E) requires a properly adjusted compass in vessels of 82.5 metres or above to have residual Deviations of no more than 3º and after the vessel's second adjustment after construction not to exceed 5º in any latitude in which the ship may operate.

Drain plugs or valves can easily get clogged by dirt and other foreign materials.

Check and clean it regularly as per your LSA checklist and PMS to prevent this from happening.

𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝘁.

✅Check lashing condition, not too tight or not too loose

✅Visually inspect the hull for deformations, defects or cracks especially near joining edge of fittings.

✅Check the drain valve, cap/plug for any dirt deposits

✅Check opening/closing condition of compartments for watertight integrity.

✅Visually inspect overall paint condition

✅On/off test search light, canopy light and ships illumination light.

✅Together with enigineers, test the engine ahead and astern for not less than 3 minutes.

✅Check the pressure gauge of accumulator of Rescue Boat davit if charged.

"How do you determine if you are using the latest Monthly Checklist of LSA and FFE?"

"How do you know if you are using the updated Forms?"

Before I give the answer, ask yourself this:

Why is this important?

You see,

The Safety Management System (SMS) of a company is continuously improved &
updated based on feedback and lesson learned.

Its like constantly looking for ways to make things safer and better.

As such, Company Forms that are being used onboard are updated as well.

Here's a sample scenario:

A new regulation was reflected on the SMS, let's say, an additional fire
extinguisher should be placed on the laundry room.

If you are unaware that the SMS is updated, you will not be able to comply to this regulation.

This can result to a PSC deficiency.

So what is the answer to the question🤔?

Simply check or download a form directly from you SMS and check the revision number & revision date.

The process of accessing the forms vary from company to company, so ask the
help of an officer about this.
