The practice of the night of 1 Muharram
The 1st night of Muharam (known by the Javanese society as Night of Satu Suro) is a time that is considered special because it marks the beginning of a new year of Migration. Some ulama have special practices that are done during the night of the transition of the year of Hijrah.
Among the practices that are organized are:
1. Drinking White Milk
According to Sayyid Muhammad bin Alawy Al Maliki, drinking white milk at the night of the beginning of the year is intended as tafa'ul (taking good omen), with the hope that throughout the coming year will be filled with goodness, purity and blessings as white as the milk you drink.
He also practiced this practice every time he entered the new Hijrah year and shared white milk with his students so that they also gain blessings.
Prayer when drinking milk:
O Allah, bless us in it, and increase us in it
May God bless it for us and increase us from it
Meaning: "O Allah, bless us with this milk and add more to us from it. "
This practice can be done after Maghrib time on the night of 1 Muharam until before dawn.
2. Writing Basmalah
According to Syeikh Abdul Hamid bin Muhammad Aly, writing Bismillahirrahmanirrahim on the night of 1 Muharam is among the practices organized as a spiritual endeavor in celebrating the new year of Hijrah.
May Allah make this year full of blessings, protection and ease for all of us.
Beginning of the Year Prayer:
Oh God, I ask you to be the first, and to your protection, and to your blessings, and to your greatness, I ask you for this new day. "
