At Buckingham Palace today, the King was presented with the first of the new £5, £10, £20 and £50 banknotes which will show his portrait.

It follows the tradition of the monarch receiving the first issues of new banknotes. The existing banknotes, from the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, will continue to be used alongside the new notes.

Mr Bailey told the King this was the first time the Bank of England had had to change the monarch on the banknotes - as the late Queen Elizabeth II had been the first monarch to have her portrait on all of the Bank of England's banknotes.

The King, who was presented with a set of notes with 00001 serial numbers, described the design as "very elegant".

The new polymer banknotes show an engraving of King Charles based on a picture taken in 2013. Unlike the notes of his mother's reign, the King is not wearing a crown. The banknotes mark one of the last major steps of the transition to the reign of King Charles, with new stamps & coins already in circulation.

The Bank of England says there will be a gradual introduction for the King Charles banknotes, with the current Queen Elizabeth notes remaining in use until they become worn or damaged.

11 April 1890 – Joseph Merrick died (b.1862)

Joseph Carey Merrick, often erroneously called John Merrick, was an English man known for his severe physical deformities. He was first exhibited at a freak show under the stage name "the Elephant Man", & then went to live at the London Hospital, in Whitechapel, after meeting Sir Frederick Treves, subsequently becoming well known in London society.

Merrick was born in Leicester & began to develop abnormally before the age of five. His mother died when he was eleven, & his father soon remarried. Rejected by his father & stepmother, he left home & went to live with his uncle, Charles Merrick. In 1879, 17-year-old Merrick entered the Leicester Union Workhouse. In 1884, he contacted a showman named Sam Torr & proposed that he might be exhibited. Torr arranged for a group of men to manage Merrick, whom they named "the Elephant Man".

After touring the East Midlands, Merrick travelled to London to be exhibited in a penny gaff shop rented by showman Tom Norman. The shop was visited by surgeon Frederick Treves, who invited Merrick to be physically examined. Merrick was displayed by Treves at a meeting of the Pathological Society of London in 1884, after which Norman's shop was closed by the police.

Merrick then joined Sam Roper's circus & was toured in Europe. In Belgium, Merrick was robbed by his road manager & abandoned in Brussels.

He eventually made his way back to the London Hospital, where he was allowed to stay for the rest of his life. Treves visited him daily, & the pair developed a close friendship. Merrick also received visits from some of the wealthy ladies & gentlemen of London society.

In May 1887, two new buildings at the London hospital were officially opened by the Prince & Princess of Wales (later king Edward VII & Queen Alexandra). The princess wished to meet the Elephant Man, so after a tour of the hospital, the royal party went to his rooms for an introduction. Princess Alexandra shook Merrick's hand & sat with him, an experience that left him overjoyed. She gave him a signed photograph of herself, which became a prized possession & she sent him a Christmas card each year.

14 April 1857

Princess Beatrice was born at Buckingham Palace & was the fifth daughter & youngest child of Queen Victoria & Prince Albert..

The birth caused controversy when it was announced that Queen Victoria would seek relief from the pains of delivery through the use of chloroform administered by Dr John Snow. Chloroform was considered dangerous to mother & child & was frowned upon by the Church of England & the medical authorities. Queen Victoria was undeterred & used "that blessed chloroform" for her last pregnancy.

A fortnight later, Queen Victoria reported in her journal, "I was amply rewarded & forgot all I had gone through when I heard dearest Albert say 'It's a fine child, & a girl!'"

From birth, Beatrice became a favoured child. Although Queen Victoria was known to dislike most babies, she liked Beatrice, whom she considered attractive. Queen Victoria once remarked that Beatrice was "a pretty, plump & flourishing child ... with fine large blue eyes, pretty little mouth & very fine skin". Her long, golden hair was the focus of paintings commissioned by Queen Victoria, who enjoyed giving Beatrice her bath, in marked contrast to her bathing preferences for her other children.

After her fathers death the Queen came to rely upon her youngest daughter, who had declared from an early age: "I don't like weddings at all. I shall never be married. I shall stay with my mother."

As her mother's secretary, she performed duties such as writing on the Queen's behalf & helping with political correspondence. These mundane duties mirrored those that had been performed in succession by her sisters, Alice, Helena & Louise. However, to these the Queen soon added more personal tasks. During a serious illness in 1871, the Queen dictated her journal entries to Beatrice.

Marriage & children;

Queen Victoria was so set against her youngest daughter marrying that she refused to discuss the possibility. Nevertheless, many suitors were put forward, including Louis Napoléon, Prince Imperial, the son of the exiled Emperor Napoleon III of France, & Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, the widower of Beatrice's older sister Alice.
