The Padang City Government, along with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), and the Padang City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), held an earthquake and tsunami simulation at the Padang Mayor’s Official Residence on Wednesday (November 5th). This activity was held simultaneously in 55 villages across eight districts in the red zone for disasters in Padang City.
The simulation began at 10:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), with a siren sounding once for one minute to signal an earthquake. Residents were asked to stop their activities and take cover behind nearby buildings, poles, and trees. After the siren stopped, it was announced that a tsunami was expected to arrive within 20 to 30 minutes. A joint team from the Student Regiment (Menwa) and the S3-IL (Student and Student Association) immediately directed residents to evacuate to the safe zone at the Santika Hotel, which was declared to be intact after the earthquake.
The Head of Preparedness at the Padang City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Deni Harzandi, stated that this simulation was the largest preparedness exercise ever conducted in Padang City, involving approximately 200,000 residents.
“This simulation involved 55 urban villages and 8 sub-districts in the red zone. The goal is to educate the community on how to respond quickly and be ready to face disasters if they occur,” said Deni.
