Safety Reminder: Always Wear Your Safety Helmet Under a Tower Crane
Never stand beneath a tower crane without wearing a safety helmet.
A falling object can accelerate rapidly due to gravity. Even a relatively small object can generate significant impact energy when it falls from height.
For example, assume a 1 kg object falls from 20 meters:
Impact velocity:
v = √(2gh)
v = √(2 × 9.81 × 20)
v ≈ 19.8 m/s ≈ 71 km/h
Its potential energy before falling is:
E = mgh
E = 1 × 9.81 × 20
E ≈ 196 joules
That energy is released during impact and can cause serious head injury, depending on the object's shape, material, impact location, and how the force is transferred.
Even a 100-gram object falling from 20 meters would reach approximately 71 km/h and have about 19.6 joules of gravitational potential energy before impact. A safety helmet is therefore not just a formality. It is an important last line of defense against falling-object hazards.
Remember: A helmet does not make it safe to remain directly beneath a suspended load or crane operation. The safest approach is to stay outside designated exclusion zones, follow site procedures, and wear the required PPE at all times.
