Syair berasal dari bahasa Arab, yaitu Syi'ir atau Syu'ur yang berarti perasaan menyadari. Kemudian kata Syu'ur berkembang menjadi Syi'ru yang berarti puisi dalam pengetahuan umum. Syair dibawa masuk ke Nusantara bersama dengan masuknya Islam ke Indonesia.
