Rebecca and her brothers sat across from their late grandfather Peter’s lawyer, eagerly anticipating what they had inherited.
Peter had dedicated his life to being a small-business owner. He operated several antique shops in the area, earning the respect of those around him. He was always willing to help anyone in need. However, the upbringing of his grandchildren was very different.
The oldest, Gareth, was completely spoiled — living a life of parties, lounging around, a lack of ambition, and still unemployed at 26. His younger brother, 20-year-old Dylan, wasn’t much different. The pair were inseparable and showed the same disregard for responsibility.
Rebecca, on the other hand, was quite different. She graduated school with high marks and aspired to become a teacher. Throughout her childhood, she spent a lot of time in her grandfather’s shop — sweeping, helping with inventory, and assisting in any way she could. She appreciated him deeply and never once asked him for money or help.
Now, they were all gathered in the lawyer’s office.
“Well,” the lawyer began, “your father will be the one managing the business. However, your grandfather arranged something unique for the three of you. Frankly, I’m quite impressed by the thought he put into this.”
Turning to her, he continued, “Rebecca, you’re up first.”
He opened a box and pulled out Peter’s engraved pen. Rebecca recognized it immediately, and tears streamed down her face.
“A pen??? HAHAHA! You’ve got to be kidding!” Gareth shouted, bursting into laughter. Dylan joined in, mercilessly mocking her.
“That’s the depth of Grandpa’s love for you!” Dylan yelled, grinning, until the lawyer raised his hand for silence. They had no idea what surprise was about to be revealed.
“I wouldn’t laugh so quickly if I were you,” the lawyer warned, reaching for an envelope.
