The courtyard where Giovanni Gunawan once played sits at the centre of PB House, a green-filled pause between the home his grandfather acquired eighty years ago, and the addition he has now designed for his own family. His daughter plays here now, in the same spot he did as a child.

In a neighbourhood where old houses either fall or freeze in aspic, swipe to discover how Gunawan, founder of architecture studio KantorGG, seems to have found a third way – letting the past breathe, giving the present room to grow.

The courtyard where Giovanni Gunawan once played sits at the centre of PB House, a green-filled pause between the home his grandfather acquired eighty years ago, and the addition he has now designed for his own family. His daughter plays here now, in the same spot he did as a child.

Named after the street it’s on, PB House occupies a narrow plot in a quiet Surabaya neighbourhood of Dutch colonial homes and century-old brick columns. The original front wing, restored in 2019, receives guests, whilst the new rear wing houses quotidian family life. Between them, the courtyard bridges worlds. Gunawan, the founder of architecture studio KantorGG (), describes the house as moving “from public to private, old to new – using the courtyard and corridor as mediators between generations and modes of living.”

The bamboo architecture at Aman Sinaya began as a client request, yet it became a defining feature of the home.

She also shares her advice for homeowners looking to build or renovate in a tropical environment — practical, thoughtful, and grounded in experience.

“When a space is emotionally resonant and materially grounded, it naturally resists disposability,” Samantha Ho of And Studio (.sg) says, adding that Victoria Park Villas reflects her belief that a home should sit between atmosphere and intention. “It’s emotional without being dramatic, serene without being plain, and always designed around the lives of the people who inhabit it.”

Victoria Park Villas by And Studio (.sg) | The owners – a couple who are content creators and business owners with two young children – live at a peculiar intersection of public and private. They came to And Studio seeking sanctuary, a place where they could simply be with their children, where the noise could be shut out.

The design challenge, though, was more nuanced than creating a mere retreat. Since much of the owners’ filming, photography, and branded content happens at home, the space had to be restful and grounding for the family, yet visually compelling enough to serve as a natural backdrop for shoots, whilst avoiding feeling like a set. Layered into this is their love for hosting – they imagined large family gatherings and elaborate parties flowing effortlessly from indoors to outdoors.

Swipe to discover how And Studio responded with a design vision that creates a quiet rebellion against the relentless pace of modern life.

House of Hidden Vistas by Atelier IF () | A generously proportioned perforated staircase, punctuated with the leafy spread of a Pachira tree, that winds its way up the core of the house, arriving finally at a skylight at the top which minimises the need for artificial lighting during the day at the same time as it creates a changing palette of light at different times of the day and even weather.

Fiona Tan, Founder of Atelier IF, says the staircase is her favourite feature in the house, not least because it functions as a way to direct views. “It also expands in footprint as it rises to become a sculptural piece that affords both horizontal and vertical visual connectivity,” she says, adding that the leaves of the plants, especially a small tree, cast interesting shadows to the underside of the staircase.

The approach to Villa Mayavee winds through a canopy of trees along Phuket’s west coast, climbing toward the peninsula south of Kamala Beach. The road narrows past low-rise homes scattered among forested hills, ending, eventually, at a private promontory where cliffs drop toward the Andaman Sea. What emerges is a series of horizontal planes that appear to float from the hillside itself.

Completed in 2008 by the Argentinian architect Martin Palleros of Tierra Design, the rectilinear manse sits on what locals call “Millionaire’s Mile.” Nearly two decades on, the house reads as freshly conceived as it does settled into place.

“Good design will define how you fill the space with memories,” says sustainability advocate Celina van Dierendonck.

She and her husband Alec recently built a three-story home along the coast of Mati, a quiet town southeast of Davao City. Constructed from 5,000 bamboo poles, the house blends seamlessly with the towering coconut trees around it. Named Aman Sinaya, after the Philippine goddess of the sea, the home is designed to connect directly with water. Both avid surfers, the couple relish the sun and sea, and their children spend much of their time outdoors when they’re home. For Celina, this house is a deliberate pause, a place to slow down and reconnect with nature.

Planter Box House is one of Formzero’s (.arch) most iconic projects.

Swipe to uncover the unexpected challenge that co-founder Lee Cherng Yih faced when weaving edible plants into a home with a fully self-sustaining irrigation system.

It raises a bigger question: beyond green walls and planters, what other under-utilised strategies could make ropical homes truly sustainable?

And deeper still — how does Formzero’s identity as an architectural research unit shape the way they design?

For the full Q&A with Lee Cherng Yih and an extra dose of inspiration, head over to address.style.
