Have you ever seen a moon halo?

A moon halo is a bright ring that appears around the Moon, usually with a radius of about 22°. It happens when moonlight passes through thin, high-altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds that contain millions of tiny ice crystals.

How it forms
• The ice crystals act like prisms and mirrors, bending and reflecting the light.
• The most common halo is the 22° halo, where the light is refracted at a 22-degree angle, creating a large circle around the Moon.
• Sometimes, faint colors can be seen, with reddish hues on the inside edge and bluish on the outside.

Cultural beliefs
• In folklore, halos around the Moon (and even the Sun) are often seen as omens, sometimes believed to predict bad weather like rain or storms, since cirrostratus clouds can indicate an approaching weather front.
• Many cultures treat it as a mystical or spiritual sign.

Scientific meaning
• While it looks mysterious, it’s simply a natural optical phenomenon caused by ice crystals high up in the atmosphere.
• It doesn’t mean something bad will happen - it’s more of a weather hint than a superstition.
