When Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale () premiered on September 12, viewers bid farewell to six seasons of drawing room intrigue and upstairs-downstairs drama. But the show’s conclusion coincides with the availability of several historic European castles that rival Highclere Castle in both scale and historical significance.

These historic European castles, currently listed through Christie’s International Real Estate (), represent centuries of European nobility and heritage. Unlike their fictional counterpart, however, they come without the burden of entailed inheritance or the need to marry American heiresses to maintain the roof. Modern buyers can acquire not just grand architecture but working estates complete with vineyards, parkland, and structures that have housed everyone from Benedictine monks to World War II prisoners of war.

Thirty-five years after its founding, GDP Architects () has quietly become one of Malaysia’s most influential design practices, leaving its mark across Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and George Town. From August 30 through October 19, the firm opens its doors for a different kind of project: examining its own evolution through “group, design, partnership,” a retrospective exhibition at its GDP Campus in Bukit Damansara.

For Sarah Merican, GDP Architects represents both heritage and evolution. Having joined the practice nearly ten years ago, with roots in its history, she now serves as a Partner in a firm that has helped define contemporary Malaysian architecture through a collective vision rather than individual stardom. Merican has witnessed how GDP navigates between global architectural currents and Malaysia’s complex cultural terrain, creating spaces that reflect the nation’s multicultural identity.

In this interview, Merican discusses GDP Architects’ three-decade journey shaping Malaysian architecture, at the link in our bio.

This issue of Tatler Homes Philippines looks beyond minimalist and maximalist labels to reveal the subtler, more human elements of design. Homes are never just about objects-they are where memory, comfort and aspiration meet.

On the cover is the residence of Steven Tan () of SM Supermalls () and his partner, Dos. Described as a modern Parisian home, it blends classical design with contemporary ease. Having lived in Paris for years, Tan carries its elegance into his space, creating a home that feels timeless, refined and welcoming.

Inside, Erica Concepcion Reyes () shares her antique-filled trove, where silver-both inherited and collected-is used daily, much like the jewellery for which she is known.

French gallerist Patrick Seguin () speaks on legacy, while designer Vanessa Gaston () reflects on her presentation at Salone del Mobile (), highlighting Philippine creativity on the global stage.

This edition also marks the fourth Tatler Homes Design Awards, a celebration of the architects, designers, makers, and homeowners who continue to shape the Filipino home. With judges Ramon Antonio, Budji Layug, Kenneth Cobonpue, Cynthia Almario, and Cyndi Beltran lending their discerning eye, the awards honour vision and talent that elevate Philippine design to world-class status.

Shaun Killa’s (.killa) Museum of the Future () is a 77-metre-tall torus covered in Arabic calligraphy, situated in Dubai’s financial district. It is perhaps the most photographed building in a city not short of photogenic architecture.

Killa has spent two decades turning Dubai’s grandest ambitions into steel and glass. His latest project, Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab (), brings that approach to luxury hospitality. The hotel, designed as a futuristic superyacht, cuts energy consumption by 40% through self-shading balconies while completing Dubai’s beachfront architectural narrative. In a city where architects compete to build the tallest, fastest, and flashiest, Killa has carved out a reputation for substance beneath the spectacle.

Tatler Homes spoke to him about maritime inspiration, technological innovation, and creating timeless architecture in a fast-moving city, all at the link in our bio.

Japanese architect and 2024 Pritzker Prize () laureate Riken Yamamoto () was the star keynote speaker at this year’s Singapore Archifest Conference (), the professional three-day programme of Archivist 2025, the country’s month-long architecture festival organised by the Singapore Institute of Architects ().

This year’s edition, helmed by festival director Rene Tan and his team at RT+Q Architects () under the theme “Don’t (Just) Think Like an Architect!”, encouraged the industry to embrace architecture as a cultural connector, a civic catalyst, and a force for new ways of thinking.

While at Archifest, Yamamoto shared his aversion to binary oppositions—inside versus outside, public versus private—warning that such dualities can limit how we imagine and inhabit space. Head to the link in our bio to read on.

The shophouses of Penang’s George Town Khoo Kongsi compound hold more than architectural interest for Soo K Chan—they’re where he spent his first four years, running between courtyards in a close-knit community of related families. Now, three decades after founding SCDA Architects ().

Chan is transforming 15 of these heritage buildings into Soori Penang (), his most personal hospitality project yet. This year marks the firm’s 30th anniversary, and today, SCDA operates primarily as an international practice. Chan’s hospitality projects span the Maldives and include Janu Tokyo (), part of the Aman () family, but it’s Soori Bali ()—which he both designed and operates—that established his reputation in luxury resort design.

Tatler Homes sits down with the renowned architect to discuss this deeply personal project, his approach to adaptive reuse, and how childhood memories can shape architectural vision; all at the link in our bio.
