A detailed illustration of how to create a simple and powerful workbench vise using a pipe clamp and standard plumbing fittings.
This DIY setup is a cost-effective alternative to a traditional, heavy cast-iron vise and is particularly useful for holding workpieces vertically for tasks like sawing, planing, or carving.
How It Works
• Base Assembly:
1. A 3/4" pipe floor fl**ge is mounted to the underside of the workbench using #12 x 2" R.H. (Round Head) wood screws.
2. A hole (1 1/16" diameter) is drilled through the workbench top, perfectly aligned with the fl**ge.
3. A short, threaded piece of 3/4" black pipe is then screwed into the fl**ge, passing up through the hole in the workbench to create a sturdy, fixed vertical post.
• Clamping Mechanism:
1. The main body of a Pony #56 pipe clamp (a common and popular brand) is slid over the vertical pipe.
2. This clamp head has a screw handle that operates the vise jaw.
3. A workpiece can be placed between the clamp's jaw and the edge of the workbench. Tightening the handle applies strong clamping pressure, holding the piece securely in place.

• Workbench: The main work surface, which needs to be thick and sturdy enough for this application.
• Pony #56 pipe clamp: The heart of the vise, providing the screw mechanism and clamping jaw.
• 3/4" black pipe: Acts as the main post for the vise.
• 3/4" pipe floor fl**ge: A standard plumbing fitting used to securely anchor the pipe to the workbench.
