There's a badge of honour that’s sometimes associated with running and endurance sports that, in the long run, can be more harmful than good

How much training can you squeeze in?

On how little sleep?

How hard can you push when you’re absolutely wrecked

From her track accomplishments, study, competition and success in sports, this week’s guest on the Any Given Runday podcast, pushed HARD!

Until she hit a wall!

Finding time to recover is not a weakness. Sometimes it’s time to push hard, sometimes the best thing you can do is find time to recover

It’s can be hard, when you are in the moment, to find that you’re running on pure adrenaline until you hit that wall

We talk more about this as well as performance, balance and burnout in this week’s episode of the Any Given Runday podcast

A huge study looking at the Strava numbers of 119,452 users and 151,813 marathons looked at how increasing your weekly mileage volume would help you get a faster marathon time

More time running makes you faster… sounds simple

While the long run maxed out at 30-32km, the key detail in the extra mileage during the week was down to easy runs with many runners averaging between 80-120km to get under that sub 3 goal

But doing 120km far from guaranteed it

And it might be even too much to get to the starting line!

The mileage you should be doing depends, in part, on the mileage you can handle!

Some people crash on higher mileage and feel the benefits of cross training to increase fitness

You should aim to:

➡️ Build Slowly

➡️ Stay Consistent (not just the long run!)

➡️ Recover properly (fuel!)

➡️ Listen to your body

But what we want to know, in your experience, are these average miles a week on the money or well off?

Marathon Training is probably not the best thing to do if your goal is purely weight loss but with the ramping up of mileage that marathon training brings, weight loss happens for a lot us

Which can feel great. You’re on a healthy lifestyle, you’re running more, you’re obviously more active

But you also could be under fueling your runs, particularly your long run at the weekend

You may not want to eat as much because you’re feeling healthier and losing weight, if you feel like you’ve weight to lose

But, if you’re not fueling your running, not only are you not getting the most out of your running, you’re also increasing your risk of injury

It’s tough trying to get the calories right to make sure you are getting enough to fuel your sessions, and yet not feel sluggish in your training from over eating

What’s your thoughts on food and fueling as you start to ramp up the mileage for marathon training? Agree/disagree with Seán and Eric in the intro to this week’s podcast?

Let us know in the comments and best comments may be read out on a future episode of the podcast
