Ever feel like your dog just knows when you're having a rough day? It turns out it's not just your imagination.

Neuroscientists at the University of Vienna recently put dogs in non-invasive fMRI machines while fully awake to see what happens in their brains when they look at us.

The results were incredible. The brain scans revealed that dogs don't just lump human emotions into a generic "good" or "bad" category. They actually have distinct neural pathways that light up specifically when they process human sadness versus fear or anger.

Even better, seeing a smiling human face triggers the caudate nucleus—the exact reward center of a dog’s brain. Your happiness is quite literally a reward to them.

Thousands of years of living alongside us have hardwired their brains to read our faces in a way no other species can.

We broke down the full study, the fMRI imaging tech, and what this means for the bond with your dog. Hit the link in bio to read the full piece.

A lot of people have been asking recently about the future of the Irish Dog Calendar and whether we’ll be attending Pet Expo in 2026, so I wanted to give a bit more context around the decisions behind both.

The reality is that the Irish Dog Calendar Project, while incredibly successful from a community and awareness perspective, simply wasn’t sustainable or viable long term in the way people probably imagined. The amount of work, logistics and costs involved behind the scenes became extremely difficult to justify moving forward, especially while trying to build bigger and more meaningful projects for the rescue community.

As for Pet Expo, I’ve genuinely appreciated everyone who has come over to chat, support BBNM and share their stories with me over the years. It’s always been a brilliant event with fantastic organisers and an amazing atmosphere. But moving forward, I want to focus more on building community driven events and experiences that directly connect with rescues and supporters throughout the year. Therefore we wont be in attendance at Pet Expo for 2026

Over the coming year, BBNM will be focusing heavily on live podcasts, in person events and working directly alongside rescues and welfare organisations across Ireland through the new BBNM Fundraising Ecosystem.

The goal is to create meaningful real world events that directly benefit rescues while also bringing supporters, adopters, volunteers and the wider dog community together in a more personal and impactful way.

That includes collaborative rescue events, live fundraising shows, adoption focused community days, live podcast recordings and other projects that directly tie into the fundraising platform and support the organisations doing incredible work every single day.

This next chapter for BBNM is about building real infrastructure, real community support and real long term impact for animal welfare groups across Ireland

For the past 18 months, I’ve been thinking constantly about how rescues across Ireland need more than awareness posts and temporary fundraisers. They need real support, real transparency and real infrastructure that genuinely helps them continue saving lives.

The problem was, I had absolutely no idea how to build something like this.

So I started learning. Slowly, piece by piece, I taught myself the skills needed to bring this platform to life.

And now, on June 1st, I officially launch the BBNM Rescue Fundraising Ecosystem 🐾

A complete fundraising and support platform built exclusively for animal rescues and charities.

The platform includes fundraising campaigns, community crowdfunding, live fundraising events, vet bill funding, memorial campaigns, peer to peer challenges, corporate matching, rescue raffles, volunteer skill sharing and much more.

Built using next generation web technologies and a modern headless infrastructure, the platform has been designed with speed, scalability and reliability at its core, delivering a faster, more secure and stable experience across all devices.

Everything has been built around the core values BBNM was founded on:
community, transparency, trust, compassion and meaningful support for animal welfare organisations across Ireland.

Most importantly, the platform will never hold donor funds.

All donations go directly into the rescue or charity’s own Stripe connected account, ensuring full transparency and accountability throughout the fundraising process.

The platform operates on a simple 3% fee while still remaining one of the lowest fee fundraising systems available.

To our own knowledge, this is the only platform worldwide bringing all of these rescue focused fundraising tools together in one place exclusively for animal welfare organisations.

My dogs have always helped me to do my best work, and in many ways, she’s still inspiring me to keep building.

And honestly, I’m JUST GETTING STARTED 💙
