This poem was prompted by the sentence:
"As she watched the lights disappear.."
For all of us who were once teenagers 😁
FREE HOUSE
As she watched the lights disappear,
Her sister whispered in her ear.
“Now at last the folks are gone,
It's time for us to party on!”
You see, Mr and Mrs Drake,
Were going on a mini break.
To a hippy dippy fête
To be ‘at one’ and meditate.
These holidays were all the rage,
For those approaching middle age.
Massage and yoga, mindfulness
For parents who are under stress!
“We have the gaff all to ourselves,
Let’s clear Mum’s vinyl off the shelves.
And listen to some vintage beats,
We don't need lavish retreats.
We can dance and shout and scream,
And let off our juvenile steam.
Let's sample Dad's favourite cognac,
He'll never know - we'll put it back.
We can put on roller skates,
And not think about the brakes.
Round and round the house we'll zoom,
Through the halls and living room.
Then we'll call up all our friends,
And say it’s one of those weekends,
Where we'll kick back and have a ball,
In a fun-filled free for all!
Tell them to bring popcorn and tunes,
It may be many, many moons
Before we have the chance again,
For this illicit clubbing den!”
“Well,” she said, “It all sounds brill,
I’m always up for a cheap thrill.
But what about the cleaning up?
They freak when we just move a cup!
There's no way we could disguise,
A knees-up from our mum's hawk eyes.
And Dad will crush our party buzz,
He'll lose the plot and call the fuzz!
This will give us a bad rep,
Much harsher than the naughty step.
This rave could seal both our fates,
And we could be in dire straits.
They'll make us do jobs round the place,
And be forever on our case.
Cooking, cleaning, ironing clothes,
And digging endless garden rows.
And worst of all, next time they flee,
They'll make sure to bring you and me,
To sip on chai tea by the pool?
No thanks, it's really not that cool.
So this time I think it's best,
To cancel plans for our Youthfest.
We've always got Netflix and Sky,
Let's ditch records for Spotify.
We can sit down at our ease,
And do whatever we should please.
No nagging about this or that
Like ‘Feed the dog, put out the cat!’
Or, ‘You know there will be no fun,
Until ye have your studies done!’
As long as we play our cards right,
8And keep our profile low tonight,
The parents will stay on our side,
A ticket for an easy ride.
We'll feel the gain of zero strife,
Happy folks makes happy life.”
Her sister pleaded on one knee.
“It'll be alright, just wait and see.
I promise I will take the rap
You won't have to do a tap.
The oldies will not have a clue.
It will just be a friend or two.
Let’s lock the cognac in the press,
And I will tidy all the mess.
Oh come on, let's have a blast,
It can be our very first and last.
I'll drink ten pots of chai tea
Just to have this raging party.
“Okay okay, I’m giving in,
Let this crazy bash begin!
And just so that we’re very clear,
If we get caught, I wasn't here,
And if your cunning plan falls through,
I hope that you find lots to do,
When Mum and Dad take you away,
On their next hippy holiday!”
