We love calving season with new life and personality on the farm. Kate Fitzgerald starting a freshly born calf on Colostrum. Kate and her husband Shane manage a 93 hectares (230 ac) Dairy Farm in Portlaw, Co Waterford with Shane’s father John, they run a grass based, spring calving system with 210 Holstein Friesian cows.

Adam Woods has been appointed as the new Editor of the Irish Farmers Journal.
A native of Ballyconnell in Co Cavan, Adam has been a member of the Irish Farmers Journal’s senior editorial leadership team for the past decade. He first joined the Irish Farmers Journal in 2016 as Beef Editor, where he was responsible for shaping the technical and news coverage of both the Irish beef industry and the international beef sector.
Over the years, Adam has overseen beef programmes and other technical programmes for the Irish Farmers Journal. Adam was also integral in the development of the Martbids real-time bidding app now being used in over 30 of the country’s marts. In September 2024, he was appointed Deputy Editor of the Irish Farmers Journal. Prior to joining the Irish Farmers Journal, Adam worked in advisory, research and specialist roles in Teagasc.
His recent exposé of antibiotic and hormone use in Brazilian farming and the impact of that investigation continues to play out in the national media and political circles.
