Turbine killed critically endangered silver from below Ardnacrusha hydroelectric station on the Lower River Shannon today. Over 97% of the flow in this Natura 2000 river is still being abstracted by ESB Networks - ignoring requirements of the Habitats Directive, Water Framework Directive and Eel Regulation. This abstraction results in severely reduced flows along 15km of river - affecting salmon and other Qualifying Interests of this SAC. There is no fish pass for downstream migrating eels. Salmon also get trapped below the power station where they try to find a 0.5 cumec flow from from the fish pass with 334 cumecs coming from the turbines yesterday! This fish pass is ineffective even during periods of low generation.
