Galway County Council has announced a €762,000 Community Climate Action Fund aimed at supporting grassroots efforts to implement climate action projects across the county.

Launched during Climate Action Week, the initiative offers full financial support to not-for-profit organisations, including community and voluntary groups such as Tidy Towns committees, development associations and sports clubs.

Eligible projects will align with one or more of five key climate themes: community energy, sustainable transport, local food promotion, circular economy and waste reduction, and local environmental action.

To celebrate the launch, the Council hosted a showcase event at the weekend at Brigit’s Garden in Rosscahill, where attendees explored successful projects and received guidance on applying for the 2025 fund. Applications will open tomorrow (21 October) via Galway County Council’s application portal https://galwaycoco.submit.com and will close on 16 December.

The 2024 round of funding backed 32 diverse initiatives across County Galway, from solar panel installations and energy-efficient lighting to cycling infrastructure, community gardens, and water refill stations.

Galway County Council’s regeneration project at Tobar Mhuire in Ahascragh has been named the winner of the ‘Building Communities’ category at the 2025 Community Housing Awards.

Organised by the Irish Council for Social Housing, the awards celebrate innovation and sustainability in public and community housing across Ireland.

The Tobar Mhuire project, led by Galway County Council and funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, saw the demolition of 10 existing homes, the construction of 12 new units, and the refurbishment of six others, along with extensive site improvements.

The project design team included Vincent Hannon Architects and Tom McNamara & Partners, and the scheme was constructed by C&N Higgins Construction.

Galway County Council and the BIA Innovator Campus have taken a leading role in promoting slow tourism in the county, hosting European partners from the Interreg Europe Slowdown project.

The week-long programme brought together nearly 40 delegates from eight countries to explore how slow tourism can support sustainable local and regional development, boost the local economy and foster responsible travel.

The delegation last week toured East Galway to meet local food producers and explore heritage sites, before traveling to Connemara to plan pilot projects, visit Killary Fjord, Renvyle, and Clifden, and engage with regional stakeholders. The programme concluded with an Interregional Steering Group meeting at Kylemore Abbey, and a visit to Spiddal Village.

Clean Ireland Recycling is backing Irish charity Project ESPWA in building a new disability centre in Bamba, Kenya, set to open in early 2026.

The facility, which will cater to hundreds of children and adults with disabilities, has been steadily taking shape through multiple volunteer missions from Ireland.

Headquartered in Shannon, Co Clare, Clean Ireland Recycling is providing building materials that are scarce locally, including timber, door locks, hinges, electrical sockets and switches. The shipment recently left Cork Port bound for Kenya.

Managing Director Brian Lyons, who has a son with disabilities, will travel to Bamba with volunteers in February 2026 to help complete the centre.
