Derval O’Rourke – Hall of Fame Induction at the 123.ie National Athletics Awards

Congratulations to Derval O’Rourke who has officially taken her place among Irish sporting royalty with her induction into the Irish Athletics Hall of Fame — a fitting honour for an athlete whose career redefined excellence on the global stage.

Her international rise ignited in spectacular fashion in 2003 at the European U23 Championships, where she stormed to fourth place in the 100m hurdles in a blistering 12.96 seconds. That run didn’t just announce her arrival — it shattered the Irish national record and clinched her qualification for the 2004 Olympic Games. It was the first major chapter in a career that would inspire a generation.

Over the years that followed, O’Rourke became a constant presence on the world’s biggest stages, competing at three Olympic Games and consistently proving she belonged among the elite. The pinnacle of her glittering career came in 2006 when she captured World Indoor gold in the 60m hurdles — a defining moment that etched her name permanently into Irish sporting history.

Relentless, fearless, and uncompromising in pursuit of greatness, O’Rourke didn’t just chase excellence — she set the standard. Her legacy now stands as a benchmark for what Irish athletes can achieve on the world stage.

“Greatness isn’t built in the spotlight — it’s forged in the unseen hours when quitting would be easier than continuing.”

One for the archives from last weekend in Derry!😀

It was a special reunion for Brian McBride, Tom Breen, John Cronin, and Brendan McDaid - members of the historic Ulster (then Northern Region) team that made history at the All Ireland Cross Country Championships in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, on 22 December 1974👦

In the Boys Under 15 race, Ulster claimed their first-ever Provincial gold medals, with Brian McBride (Glenree) finishing second and Tom Breen (Downpatrick) third, both making the individual podium. The rest of the scoring team included John Cronin (Glenree), Damian Quinn (Omagh), Brendan McDaid (Letterkenny), and Dessie O’Donnell (Sparta), with Brendan Patton (Finn Valley) just outside the scoring six.

Fast forward 51 years, and it was wonderful to meet up again last Sunday in Derry. Brian is now coaching successful Sligo AC athletes, while Brendan and John were officiating for Athletics Ireland. Tom has also made a significant contribution to our sport since his competitive days👏

Here’s to the memories, the friendships, and the enduring spirit of Irish athletics! 🏃‍♂️🏆🇮🇪

Record Breaker Kate O’Connor Named Athlete of the Year

Irish athletics has a new standard-bearer — and her name is Kate O’Connor. The Dundalk star swept the top honours at the 123.ie National Athletics Awards, which took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Santry, Dublin.

After a sensational 2025 season on the world stage, Kate was crowned Athlete of the Year and also secured Field & Multi Event Athlete of the Year — a double that underlined her status as one of the world’s very best. Her year included World Championship silver in Tokyo, World University Games gold, World Indoor silver and European Indoor bronze.

The night also honoured one of Ireland’s all-time greats, with sprint hurdling legend Derval O’Rourke inducted into the Irish Athletics Hall of Fame, celebrating a glittering career that included three Olympic Games and a World Indoor title.

Across the awards, rising stars, record-breakers, volunteers and clubs were all celebrated, reflecting an extraordinary year for the sport nationwide.

From teenage sprint sensations to marathon warriors, from relay record-breakers to lifelong servants of Irish athletics — this was a night that honoured the past, celebrated the present and looked boldly to the future.

But at the heart of it all stood Kate O’Connor — world class, record-breaking, and now officially Ireland’s Athlete of the Year.

Bandon AC’s FIONA EVERARD claimed her second national senior cross country crown, adding to the title she first captured in 2023.

The Cork native—now training out of Galway—bided her time through the early stages as Niamh Allen (Leevale AC) set a relentless tempo up front.

With a little more than a lap remaining, Everard surged past Allen and powered away, turning the final stretch into a commanding solo run to the finish.

Her victory also confirms her place on the Irish team for the European Cross Country Championships, marking her third consecutive appearance on the continental stage.

This latest triumph is yet another sign of Everard’s growing consistency and competitive maturity. Her controlled effort, smart race strategy, and fearless late charge reflect an athlete who continues to rise with every season.

“Success is not just about winning races—it’s about believing in the strength you’re still discovering within yourself.”
