Bishop Andrew has paid tribute to the late Rev Shiela Johnson who died in a single-vehicle road accident near Glenties, on Wednesday afternoon, in which her husband, Rev Canon Stanley Johnson, was injured. Canon Johnson was treated in Letterkenny University Hospital for what were described as non-life threatening injuries.
Bishop Andrew said Mrs Johnson had served God with distinction and he has asked people to remember her husband and the wider family in their prayers.
"I am deeply saddened by the news of Shiela's death," the Bishop said. "She served God with distinction during her ministry. She had an adventurous spirit and was a friend to many, sharing her gifts of warmth and generosity, and lending those who needed it a listening and compassionate ear. Shiela had a great love for her parishes but supremely for Stanley and their family. I ask you to remember them in your prayers."
Rev Shiela and Canon Stanley, who are pictured below, arrived in Donegal in 2001 after serving together in the Diocese of Kilmore, Elphin & Ardagh from 1989 to 2001. Canon Stanley was instituted as Rector of Clondehorkey and Mevagh, while Rev Shiela was appointed Priest-in-charge of the neighbouring Parish of Clondevaddock. They served in their Donegal parishes from 2001 until their retirement in 2009.
