National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management has issued the following statement on Storm Amy

Storm Amy was a significant storm that impacted across all of Ireland with the West and Northwest particularly badly affected. Damage assessments are being carried out by response agencies at local level. Initial reports indicate localised surface flooding in many areas with significant numbers of trees down in the West, North West, North East and Midlands.

The National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management (NDFEM) convened both the National Severe Weather Humanitarian Group and the National Severe Weather Critical Infrastructure Group on Saturday morning. These groups bring together the various stakeholders who will be responding across all sections to the aftermath of Storm Amy.

Storm Amy has resulted in significant damage to electricity supply, some localised flooding, impact on communication networks, and some roads blocked or damaged by fallen trees. Significant work is underway to address those issues. In some areas, homes and businesses have been impacted, and the priority for all agencies is to provide the necessary support to those who have been affected. The restoration of all services remains the focus for utilities over the weekend.

Providing the necessary assistance to the people impacted by the storm is the priority of the National Severe Weather Humanitarian Group. Any householder affected by the storm, with an urgent financial need, should contact the Community Welfare Service [email protected]

Local Authorities are responding throughout the affected areas and ask for the continued cooperation of all communities while they undertake the necessary works to open roads and respond to incidents. Nationally, all road users are being advised to be aware of the dangers that may remain following the storm, such as downed pylons, lines, trees, branches, and other debris, which could block roads. Obey any road closures or diversions put in place by local authorities and An Garda Síochána.

An Important Public Safety Message: ESB Networks reminds the public to Stay Safe and Stay Clear of Fallen Electricity Wires. If you come across fallen wires or damaged electricity network, never, ever touch or approach these as they are LIVE and extremely dangerous. Please report any damage to the electricity infrastructure by calling 1800 372 999.

The National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management has issued this statement on Storm Amy that is battering the country

They said that local response teams are preparing for challenging conditions in affected counties

The National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management (NDFEM), Met Éireann and relevant agencies met again this morning to discuss the arrival of Storm Amy which will affect Ireland’s weather today, tonight and into Saturday.

Met Éireann is predicting strong winds up to gale force in some cases and heavy rain across the country, which could lead to localised flooding, travel disruption, fallen trees and possible power outages.

Met Éireann is advising the persistent and heavy rain will fall on already saturated grounds, with river levels increasing.

For our area, there is a Status Yellow - Wind warning for Dublin, Louth, Wicklow. Strong to near gale force westerly winds for a time. Possible Impacts: Difficult travelling conditions debris, loose objects displaced, some fallen trees possible. Valid: 06:00 Saturday 04/10/2025 to 12:00 Saturday 04/10/2025

Status Yellow for the whole country. Strong to near gale force westerly winds for a time, difficult travelling conditions, debris, loose objects displaced and some fallen trees possible. Valid: 12:00 Friday 03/10/2025 to Midnight.

The NDFEM will continue to liaise with Met Éireann and monitor the situation to coordinate an appropriate response. On the ground, Local Authority Severe Weather Assessment Teams (SWATs) will continue to monitor conditions locally and Local Authorities have their emergency response teams in place, ready to respond where and when necessary.

Keith Leonard, National Director of the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management, emphasised, “Some areas have already experienced the effects of Storm Amy and as we move through the day and into the night the challenging weather conditions will be felt in many counties. Local Authority severe weather teams are activated and continue to prepare for the storm’s arrival and the aftermath.

“For those in areas affected, my advice continues to be that they pay attention to their local conditions and members of the public should monitor Met Éireann’s ongoing advice and act accordingly. Even after the storm has passed, there is a possibility of road flooding or fallen trees so drivers are urged to take care in the aftermath of the storm."

He added, “For all members of the public, whatever part of the country you are in, rain and winds will be a factor overnight and early tomorrow. I would urge you to stay away from coastal areas during this period and to heed the appeal from the Irish Coast Guard for people to ‘Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry”.

Call for traffic calming in Mell, Drogheda is rejected

A call for new traffic calming measures at Lower Mell, Drogheda, has been rejected after Louth County Council confirmed the location is not scheduled for funding from the Department of Transport.

The motion was tabled by Cllr James Byrne (FF) at the September meeting of Louth County Council. He requested that traffic calming be installed at Lower Mell between the montessori/church and the Circle K service station.

The councillor said his proposal followed a recent serious accident on the stretch of road, along with “numerous minor collisions in recent times.”

Responding to the motion, David Hanratty of the council’s Operations and Environmental delivery section said the authority does not hold collision data itself.

“The council does not have access to collision data on the basis of GDPR requirements,” he said, referring to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

He explained that the Department of Transport had identified nine locations in Louth for safety interventions in 2026 under Circular 15 of 2025.

“The stretch you mentioned is not featured for 2026 and therefore will not be funded,” Mr Hanratty said, noting that traffic calming had previously been installed on the R168 at the Cement/Slane junction in 2020.

Following the meeting, Cllr Byrne said he was “disappointed with the response” to his notice of motion.
