An eighteen-year wait for trans healthcare with more than 2,500 on waiting list

In last year's article the waiting list for the self-named National Gender Service (NGS) was over 2,000 people and an estimated wait time at almost 13 years for new referrals. My Freedom of Information (FoI) request for the latest numbers has been kindly processed, so let's look at how things were at the end of 2025. As with the previous two years, the data is in the same format which makes the analysis much easier....

If you noticed the GAA’s Gamechanger campaign at all you may well have assumed that the organisation had chosen to invest some of their considerable income — €132.9 million in 2024 — in Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence (DSGBV) awareness campaigns. Someone more cynical might assume that this was a neat piece of PR for the GAA given its male-oriented focus and machismo....

Last month, I shared examples of letters that the National Gender Service (NGS) has been sending to GPs, advising them not to provide their trans patients with blood tests to monitor their hormones. It argued this course of action on the basis that there are no risks associated with blood hormone concentrations. This was contradicted by the NGS's own internal policies, before even considering the need to ensure optimal dosing, effectiveness following the instructions of a patient's own medical team, or international best practice guidelines....
