The start of 2025 marks a defining moment for publishers on social, with TikTok emerging as the dominant force in the publisher landscape, and news content returning to Facebook in a big way.

This report continues our previous research on a grouping of 50 publishers, analyzing their performance across web, Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok.

In the report, you’ll discover more about:

- TikTok’s surging publisher dominance: TikTok now leads all platforms in publisher engagement, accounting for a majority of the total and leaving a once dominant Instagram in its wake.

- Hard news on the rise: Fox News, ABC, CBS, and CNN climbed the ranks this quarter, showing that news-driven content (especially political) still resonates, particularly on Facebook and X. Our group of 50 publishers on Facebook saw a 200% increase in engagement compared to Q1 2024, and Fox itself had a 700%+ increase.

- Platform-specific format trends: TikTok owns short video, Instagram thrives on sports and nature visuals, Facebook leaned into photos, and X remains the go-to for breaking news and political takes.

At the NewsWhip Publisher Summit, we spoke with Sophie Rosenbaum of The Associated Press, Neal Rothschild of Axios, and Jake Grovum of The New York Times about the changing role of social media in audience development for publishers.

Here are some key takeaways from the discussion.

14/11/2024

News consumption is changing, and so is how news publishers approach its distribution on social. It’s no longer just about driving website traffic, it’s about building a brand where audiences naturally engage.

In our latest report, we took 50 of the top outlets from across the different platforms — including news, lifestyle, politics, and sports — and uncovered the key trends shaping their success on social today.

Here’s a glimpse at what we found:

📌 Success on video platforms: Instagram and TikTok have dominated when it comes to social engagement with news publishers, making visual, short-form video content an essential part of their strategy, which will only continue into 2025.

📌 Cable and local news thrive on TikTok: Cable news outlets and local stories are capturing interest with younger audiences who look to social media for their news consumption.

📌 The importance of measurement: These trends are constantly in flux, and to be successful in social publishing, you need to be able to understand and react to them in real time.
