The death has been announced of John Hume today by his Family, following a long illness. Mr Hume was the former leader of the SDLP in Northern Ireland. A pioneering peace-maker, credited with brokering the Good Friday Agreement in the Autumn of 1998. Subsequently being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize that same year. In 2010 he was voted "Ireland's Greatest Person" in a poll conducted by RTE. Former US President Bill Clinton commented he was "Ireland's answer to Martin Luther King".

As people look forward to the August Bank Holiday weekend, over 1,000 homes have been left without a power supply in parts of North County Dublin. A major fault has been reported on the EBS Networks website across Fairview, Donaghmede / Sutton and Howth. A spokesperson for ESB Networks said they are working to restore power as quickly as possible and apologised for the inconvenience to Customers.

A man in his 40s has been arrested and charged in connection with defacing and vandalising the Singer Luke Kelly's statue in Guild Street, Dublin. The Singer's statue has been vandalised seven times to date and caused outrage nationwide. CCTV is due to be installed on Thursday in an effort to address the issue.
