Halloween disguise meaning

At Halloween , people believed that spirits and ghosts came into our world. One of the most feared creatures was the púca, a goblin that could change shape into a horse, bull, goat, or even a small monster. It was said to have a human’s mind but a demon’s heart.

Because people were afraid of being kidnapped by spirits, they dressed up in disguises to look like ghosts themselves, hoping not to be noticed. This became the custom of dressing up in costumes during Halloween, people wore scary or funny masks, rubbed soot on their faces, used fake names, and spoke in strange voices.

Disguises were only one way to stay safe.

Samhain: the Celtic New Year.

Samhain was one of the four pre-Christian festivals . It marked the end of one pastoral year and the start of a new one.

A night when the living and the dead met,
bonfires burn to protect the living,
and old souls wander home by lantern light.
The end of harvest.
The beginning of winter.
Today it’s Halloween.

Old vs. Young — the Herring Gull: The herring gull is one of the most common birds you can meet in Dublin.
On the left the young herring gull, still dressed in mottled brown feathers.
On the right the adult, white head, grey wings, and that unmistakable yellow beak with the red spot.

It takes four years for these birds to grow into their elegant adult look.
In the meantime, the young ones learn fast how to steal sandwich, scavenge and claim their place in the Dublin skyline.

They live on average 12-15 years but some can live up to 50 years!
So next time one eyes your lunch by the Liffey, remember… it might be older than you thin. . ire land

The secret garden of County Wicklow.

Long ago, this place was just a small mill by the River Vartry in County Wicklow.
Today, it’s one of the most beautiful gardens in Ireland, where plants grow freely and naturally.

The idea came from Irish gardener William Robinson, who believed gardens should look wild, not formal.
The Walpole family followed his dream, planting trees and flowers from all over the world.

Now more than 4,000 plant species fill the garden with colours, scents, and sounds of the river.
Every path feels calm and alive, changing with each season.

A place to walk, breathe, and let nature do the talking.
