Throughout all of these larger productions we have still fo

It's Thursday, and we're back to celebrate another of our brilliant productions from the last twenty five years.

In 2021, Boulder produced Memento Mori, a gothic horror short, with support from RTÉ and Screen Ireland. Written and directed by our Creative Director Paul O’Flanagan, the film was narrated by Mark Gatiss. 'Memento Mori' means 'Remember Death'; set in Victorian Dublin, it tells the tale of a post-mortem photographer and an unforgettable encounter with his latest subject one dark and stormy night.

Debuting at Galway's Film Fleadh, Memento Mori had a hugely successful festival run - winning many awards such as the ‘James Horgan Best Animated Short Award’ at the Fleadh and ‘Best Character Based Short’ at the Los Angeles Animation Festival - before being long-listed for the Oscars 2022.

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting a Character Design and Design Masterclass for our Boulder team with Chris Battle.

Chris is an Emmy and Annie Award nominated television animation industry veteran, best known for his character designs for hit Cartoon Network shows like Teen Titans Go, Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack, as well as a host of projects for Disney, Marvel, Nickelodeon, Warner Bros, & more.

Chris dove into his design process and brought everyone through areas such as 'The Essence of Good Character Design', 'The Psychology of Good Design', 'Designing with Volume' and a breakdown of how characters, props, backgrounds and colour work together.

Our Crew had a fantastic time and took away a lot from the workshop. A big shout out to Chris Battle and our wonderful Development Team for putting together such a fun and informative afternoon for everyone!

That's a wrap on Cartoon Forum 2025!

Our Wizzos pitch was a magical success - we're very excited to share this project with you in the future. It was great to connect with our European animation partners and peers: the sun shone, the food was fantastic and we even got to spend some time with local pups!

Here's to CF next year ⭐

It’s Thursday, so time for another throwback post and today’s an extra special one!

Back in 2015, Boulder Media revived the iconic Danger Mouse for CBBC/Netflix. It stands as one of our most meaningful productions, we gave it a fresh new take to huge success.

Our reboot of the children’s classic was critically lauded and inspired a video game and stage adaptation. The show meant a lot to our crew, many of whom grew up with the original. Bringing it back to life was both a professional milestone and a childhood dream fulfilled for the team.

This week marks the 10th anniversary of its first broadcast! What remains your favourite Danger Mouse scene or episode? Tell us below!

It's Thursday again and that means another throwback to a fantastic Boulder production: The Amazing World of Gumball.

A well-loved family favourite, the show first aired on Cartoon Network in 2011. It tells the story of our titular character Gumball Watterson - a blue, anthropomorphic cat - and his family - including adopted goldfish brother Darwin, younger sister Anais and parents Nicole and Richard - as they navigate life in the fictional Californian city of Elmore.

Embracing an eclectic art style that incorporated traditional animation, live-action, puppetry and more, Boulder was thrilled to work on Season One (helping the show win a British Academy Children's Award for Animation in 2011) and bring TAWOG's amazing characters and stories to the screen!

What are your standout moments with Gumball, Darwin and the gang? Share with us below!

Boulder turned 25 this year and to mark the milestone we're taking a look back at our many fantastic productions and projects. Today let's talk about Cat Burglar, an interactive comedy heist short film and a wonderful piece of Boulder's archival work.

Created by the brilliant Charlie Brooker and co-written by Mike Hollingsworth and James Bowman, Cat Burglar debuted on Netflix in February 2022. The film tells the story of Rowdy - a feline (cat) burglar and Peanut - the canine security guard of the art museum Rowdy is determined to break in and steal from. With a typical run time of about 15 minutes, the animated short offered around 90 minutes of animation in total for the viewer to explore, depending on their interactive storyline choices.

With a dark and absurdist comedic tone, and the voice acting talents of James Adomian, Alan Lee and Trevor Devall, Cat Burglar received positive critical reviews and was nominated for two Children and Family Emmy Awards, winning for 'Outstanding Music Direction and Composition for an Animated Program' in 2022.

The film's animation style paid homage to iconic animator Tex Avery, known for his work during the golden age of American animation and his evolution of famous animated characters such as Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny. Cat Burglar offered its viewers twists and turns and a nostalgic feel to the art style.

Do you remember what paths you chose for Rowdy and Peanut? Let us know below!

Today we're looking back on another great Boulder production: Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz.

Running for three seasons between 2017 and 2020, the kids' series loosely tells Baum's beloved story of Dorothy and the land of Oz. Breathing new life into iconic characters like Tinman, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion, the show imagines Dorothy has been crowned the new Princess of Emerald City. We watch her tackle her new royal life and duties with generosity, courage, and kindness.

The show presented many opportunities of growth for Crew who worked on it, as they experimented and grew in their knowledge of Toon Boom and overcame rigging challenges when working with many rich patterns and texture. A lot of the animators who worked on the series went on to become Leads of subsequent shows at Boulder. Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz remains an important show at the Studio, not only for its eye catching animation but the many lessons learned along the way!

Do you remember Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz? Share your favourite memory below, and enjoy some stills from a show we were delighted to be a part of!

It's Thursday again and we're back to reminisce on another fantastic Boulder production. This week we're going back almost 20 years to look at 'El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera'. Premiering on Nickelodeon in 2007, the series was created by Jorge R. Gutierrez and Sandra Equihua and was inspired by experiences the pair had growing up.

Set in the fictional crime-ridden Mexican-American Miracle City, our hero Manny is a 13-year-old kid with super powers who comes from a complex lineage; his dad a superhero known as White Pantera and his granddad a super villain known as Puma Loco. Torn between the two and the paths they want him to take, the show explores the dynamics of family, choice and consequence, and does so with gorgeous Flash animation and belly laughs, all while celebrating the richness of Mexican American culture.

With an incredible cast of voice actors that includes Alanna Ubach and Grey DeLisle, ‘El Tigre’ is beloved amongst fans. The popular show spawned merch, a video game and most recently, a beautiful art book that takes us behind the scenes of the hit animated series.
