Voice-Over | Tools Of The Trade

My go-to microphones are hugely popular amongst the vast majority of voice-over professionals out there and in many ways, both regarded as industry standard.

First up my beloved Neumann TLM 103 large condenser mic. There’s an intimacy, warmth and clarity that makes this mic the obvious choice when it comes to commercial reads. Even without any processing this baby hits the sweet spot and when teamed up with my Universal Audio 6176 tube pre-amp/compressor-limiter it really sings. I personally feel it truly captures the true essence of my voice without adding any coloration, while keeping intact that impressive resonance that brings out the best in my performances.

Sitting alongside my Neumann is the Sennheiser MKH 416 Shotgun mic. If I want to pack a punch but still want to capture every nuisance of my timbre this dynamic mic does exactly that, it’s directional so rejects a lot of ambient noise, perfect on promos or imaging as it cuts through the mix delivering a full, rounded, in your face sound. Straight from the capsule without any EQ this beast will give your reads more balls, capturing that deep low-end frequency with just enough high-end sparkle.
