Open House Dublin kicks off this weekend, and one of the many joys of Ireland’s largest festival of architecture is that with over 200 events there’s always something spectacular to see and do even if you happen to be a last minute merchant.

Open House Dublin is about discovery. Sometimes the best festival moments happen when you wander into something unexpected, an unplanned talk, a walk you hadn’t considered, a building you didn’t know existed. So don’t stress if you’re late to the bookings. There’s still a city full of Future Heritage waiting to be explored.

We’ve put together a quick guide to making the most of the festival without advance planning. A good way is to start with the drop-in events as not everything in Open House Dublin needs a ticket. Many talks, exhibitions, and casual events are designed to pop into, so this is a great option if you haven’t booked anything yet - just head to the website at OpenHouseDublin.com and filter events by the “Drop-in” option.

The full 2025 Open House Dublin programme is available there too.

“You’re in the former Red Parrot on Dorset St, not some hoity-toity, laminated-pastry pocket of Stoneybatter, this is the actual true-blue, die or do Northside. Roll with the punches or slink back across the river. Service is young and charming and feels animated by the knowledge that the food being ferried from the pass is a little special. Everyone knows the menu inside-out and seems happy to share it. It’s a simple recipe that many other places would do well to copy.“

They’ve been hiding in plain sight, but not for much longer. We’re talking about 110 works of art that graced the walls of during the legendary drinking period
from 1979 to 2019.

Having been recently salvaged by social enterprise they’re set to go under the hammer at this coming Sunday, and with no reserve and no limits, this is a great opportunity to get your hands on a unique piece of Irish art history without the need for a broker on speed dial.

The items can currently be viewed at invaluable.com, while the whims of secret buyers, and those lurking behind their screens at home, will also be facilitated via live online bidding on the big day.
The much anticipated event kicks off at The Market Bar at 3pm on Sunday October 12th, with doors open at 2pm for those early birds who fancy a pint and another gander at the works beforehand.

All proceeds are destined for the Kickstart Kitchen, a fantastic cause on a mission to change the lives of those facing barriers to employment by offering free professional chef training and recruitment services to anyone who needs a second chance.

See ya there!

“It was my grandmother, Sighle Humphreys, who taught me Irish and when I asked her one day what the word for hole was, she replied: ‘Do you mean one dug into the ground by an animal? That’s an uachas. Or one made by fish in a sandy riverbed for spawning? That’s a saothar. Or if it’s been hollowed out by hooves of beasts and then filled by rain it’s a plobán. Or if a lobster is hiding in one it’s a fach. Or if it’s been created as a hideaway by a wild beast it’s a puathais.’” - Thirty Two Words For Field.

Rich in autumnal colours and tone, THE MASTERMIND is an exciting, distinctive heist movie that makes for perfect October viewing. Heavily influenced by 1970s New Hollywood cinema in style and tone, and featuring an energetic, evocative jazz score, the film transports audiences to 70s Massachusetts where we meet Mooney, a man smart enough to get into trouble, but not smart enough to get out of it…

Wanna win two tickets to a preview screening of the Mastermind on Tuesday October 14th? Check out how on totallydublin.ie or via the link in our stories. Good luck! 🤞

“The thing about is that it happens for 18 days and then it’s gone. If you miss it, likely you’ll never see those shows again, particularly with the international shows – it’s your one chance to see something that has impressed, delighted, shocked and impacted audiences all over the world. In short, we just encourage people to get up off the couch and give it a go”.
