January 6th, also known as ‘Little Christmas’, ‘The Epiphany’ and Twelfth Night, often tends to be one of the busiest days at this time of year. Dubliner James Joyce immortalised many of the Irish traditions associated with the end of the Christmas festivities in his short story The Dead, in which the characters gather for a sumptuous meal around a beautifully decorated table featuring a fat brown goose, a great ham and a round of spiced beef.

More importantly here in Ireland the date is known as Nollaig na mBan, and was traditionally seen as an opportunity for women of Irish households to take a break and catch up with friends for some rest and relaxation following all their hard work throughout the yuletide season. Ireland being Ireland, they were of course also then expected to take down the Christmas decorations and clean the house afterwards.

The past few years have seen a revival of the best aspects of the tradition, with the day increasingly marked with small parties and literary and cultural gatherings such as a festival by celebrating women in their local communities on the city’s Northside.

Happy Nollaig na mban! Don’t forget to switch the lights off! xx 🎄🥂

For visitors to National Gallery of Ireland January usually means one thing – an opportunity to view the popular annual exhibition of watercolours by English artist J.M.W. Turner, as part of a much loved winter tradition that has been underway in Dublin for over a century now.

The watercolours remain in pristine condition, thanks to the foresight of benefactor Henry Vaughan, who ensured that they would only ever be displayed during the month of January when natural light levels are at their lowest. As a result their vivid, glowing colours continue to mesmerise over 125 years later.

This year’s iteration, entitled Turner As Inspiration, curated by Anne Hodge, is enriched by the inclusion of watercolours and prints by artists such as Hercules Brabazon, William Callow, John Faulkner, James H. Burgess, Jennifer Lane and Niall Naessens who found inspiration in Turner’s mastery of light, colour, and atmosphere and pay homage to his enduring legacy.

Together, these works underscore how Turner continues to inspire new artistic generations.

A real treat for art lovers as the new year begins.

The Turner Watercolours are on view in The Print Gallery of The National Gallery until January 31st 2026. Admission is free!

Though we live in a world that dreams of ending
that always seems about to give in
something that will not acknowledge conclusion
insists that we forever begin.

“They say in Di**le there are two seasons: six months before the Wren and six months after the Wren and many of the participants in the tradition today are 5th/6th generation Wren members, all healthily obsessed with the tradition.”

known for their excellent style crossovers and boundary pushing lyrics, are playing their final gig as Tebi Rex in tonight.

After a decade of carving their own space in Irish music, combining hip-hop, alt-rap, trad, pop and spoken word with sharp social commentary, dark humour, and an impish charm, the beloved duo are bowing out on their terms.

In a wide ranging interview ahead of their last gig they reflect on love, loss, legacy, letting go.
