As we approach the premiere of THE ESSENCE OF EVA at the Galway Film Fleadh this Saturday, 12th July @ 8pm, we were reminded that 10 years ago today, 9th July, 2015, our little film about 30 Irish centenarians, aged 100 or over, OLDER THAN IRELAND premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh. The film went on to win the Award for Best Documentary at the Fleadh. It played theatrically in Ireland and around the world becoming once of the highest grossing Irish documentaries of all time in terms of international and domestic box office. It sold more DVDs during the Christmas season in 2015 than any other film including international blockbusters reaching HMVs & Tower Records’ number 1 Best Seller list and it was one of just a few Irish films to reach 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with over 25 reviews. It received a Critics Pick from the New York Times in 2016, which resulted in a call from Steven Speilberg to ask to watch the film with his 99 year old father. The film also had the honour to play twice in the National Gallery of Ireland among so many other prestigious venues. We are so grateful to the thirty remarkable centenarians who featured in the film and to their families for their extraordinary openness and generosity of spirit. The film features Ireland’s oldest ever citizen, Kathleen Snavely who was 113 and Ireland’s oldest ever man, Luke Dolan who was 108. Thank you also to Screen Ireland who funded the film, Element Pictures Distribution for their great work in getting the film out there and to all the crew for their extraordinary work during the making of the film. Happy 10th Birthday Older Than Ireland!!
