you know home is plural when:
• you ask whether they want the short answer or the family-tree answer when they ask where you’re from.
•your personality shifts slightly depending on which language you’re speaking.
•you can miss Lyon while sitting in Dublin and miss Dublin while you’re in Lyon.
•some foods feel like childhood. Others feel like the life you built.
•you don’t translate every expression anymore. Some things belong to one language.
•going “home” requires specifying which one.
•your accent makes perfect sense to you and absolutely nobody else.
•you don’t feel half of anything. You’re just made from several places.
•living between cultures does strange things to the idea of belonging. Home stops being a dot on a map and becomes something you carry.

No one really warns you about what happens when you come home after living abroad.
You expect familiarity. The language, the streets, the little things you never had to think about.
And they are familiar.
But you aren’t quite the same person who left.
We talk a lot about the courage it takes to build a life somewhere new. Less about what happens when that new life changes the way you belong to the old one.
Maybe that’s the strange thing about living between cultures.
Home doesn’t stop being home.
It just stops being only one place.
If you’ve ever lived away long enough to come back differently, you probably know the feeling.
