UPDATED: Victory for Okorocha as court nullifies APC Imo congresses.

The Federal High Court in Owerri on Thursday nullified the controversial ward and local government congresses of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State.

Party members loyal to Governor Rochas Okorocha filed the suit.

In a two hours judgement, Justice Lewis Allago said the congresses were never held in the state in the first place.

He therefore ordered the party to conduct fresh ward congresses in the state in line with the guidelines of the party.

“They should go back and conduct fresh congresses in accordance with the constitutions of the party; they should be responsible and save our democracy,” he added

The judge said he relied on the report of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which is the body mandated by the Electoral Act to supervise primaries and congresses of political parties.

According to him, INEC in its report attached as exhibit by the plaintiffs, affirmed that APC congresses were not held in the state.

Mr Allagoa in his ruling dismissed the argument of counsel to the defendants that the plaintiffs lacked the locus standi to challenge the conduct of the ward congresses in the state.

He ruled that the plaintiffs having established the fact that they are members of the party and ward chairmen, have the locus standi to challenge the outcome of the ward congresses.

Mr Allagoa also dismissed the argument by counsel to the second and eight defendant, Kelvin Nwufor, that the plaintiffs did not get leave of court to serve the defendants outside the jurisdiction of the court, stating that the Federal High Court has one jurisdiction.

Macron confers “Commander of the Legion of Honour” on Adenuga.

France’s President, Emmanuel Macron, on Wednesday in Lagos conferred France’s highest national honour of Commander of the Legion of Honour on Globacom Chairman, Mike Adenuga.

A statement from Mr Adenuga’s company said with the conferment, the business mogul becomes the first Nigerian to be decorated with the award.

The president bestowed the prestigious award on Mr Adenuga at the inauguration of the new Alliance Francaise, Mike Adenuga Centre in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Explaining why the French Government decided to confer the country’s highest honour on Mr Adenuga, President Macron said the businessman is “a true role model for Africa” who has contributed immensely to the growth of the African and French economy.”

President Macron applauded Mr Adenuga on his promotion of the French language and culture in Nigeria, and also commended Bella Disu, Mr Adenuga’s daughter who conceived, coordinated and executed the Alliance Française project.

Mr Macron disclosed that in his two and half years in Nigeria, he could testify that Nigeria holds one trump card that is more important to surmount all challenges it may be facing now. This, he said, is the “incomparable spirit of entrepreneur, tenacity and ability to think out of the box,” adding that “ Mr Adenuga personifies all these qualities.”

The audience at the event included Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos, Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, top government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and captains of industry.

In 2012, Nigerian government conferred the award of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Nigeria’s highest honour for a civilian who is not in government, on Mr Adenuga.

He is also a recipient of Ghana’s highest civil award, the Companion of the Star of Ghana (CSG).

Air Peace inaugurates first all-female flights to Abuja, Owerri.

Air Peace on Thursday inaugurated its first all-female flights from Lagos to Abuja and Owerri, to promote gender equality in the nation’s aviation industry.

The Boeing B777-300 aircraft piloted by Simisola Ajibola and assisted by Senior First Officer Quincy Owens landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at 3.29 p.m. amidst pomp and pageantry from aviation stakeholders.

The aircraft also departed Abuja and touched down at the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, Owerri at 6.00 p.m. where it was welcomed with a ceremonial water salute.

Speaking at a brief ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, commended Air Peace for joining the league of airlines that had operated flights with an all- female cockpit, cabin crew members, engineers and flight dispatchers.

Mr Sirika, represented by Talba Alkali, Director, Safety and Technical Policy, Ministry of Transportation, said the feat had shown that the airline was gender friendly.

According to him, this is the first time a Nigerian airline is carrying out an all-female flight with a high capacity aircraft, adding that lower capacity aircraft were used by both Arik Air and Aero Contractors in previous occasions.

“Air Peace has made a tremendous impact on the industry and we as regulators and the ministry will continue to create an enabling environment for the airline and other domestic airlines to thrive.

“Today’s event is yet another testament of the safety of our airspace and we will continue to work with the airlines to make it safer,’’ he said.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, said over 20 per cent of key positions in the airline were being held by women, who had demonstrated that they had the capacity to deliver.

Mr Onyema said the airline had employed about 2,000 workers since it began operations over three years ago, stressing that about 1,500 of the employees were women.

End of Boko Haram will come sooner than later – Osinbajo.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Thursday that the celebration of the 2018 Nigerian Army Day – NADCEL at Mongunu in Borno North was a proof that the “end of the Boko Haram terrorists group “will come sooner than later.’’

Mr Osinbajo, who spoke at a Mini Trade Fair and Military Equipment Exhibition as part of activities to mark the day, also said that it was a proof that the terrorist had been “substantially degraded”.

According to him, Borno and the entire region (North East) will surely bounce back, and, with the support of the rest of the country, make up for the years of bloodshed and destruction.

The vice president said that the Sambisa forest, once the symbol of Boko Haram’s domination of the region, had been reclaimed, while the work of rebuilding had started in many communities across the state.

“Indeed, we are here to celebrate all of these wonderful successes, and progress.

“At a point, a few years ago, it felt as though they – terrorists were succeeding.

“As a result of the insecurity, social and economic life rolled to a halt in many parts of the state, as Boko Haram controlled a large territory and acted like the de-facto government of the state.

“The town of Monguno, which today is playing host to us, was a few years ago firmly in the hands of the terrorists.

“Today, thankfully, the tide has turned, in large part on account of the gallant and heroic work of the Nigerian Army. And it is on account of this that we are here today, to celebrate.

“We are here to celebrate the gallantry of our soldiers, men and women from every part of Nigeria, of different faiths and tribes and tongues, gathered to fight and defeat a common enemy.

Supreme Court clears Saraki of false asset declaration charges.

The Supreme Court on Friday cleared Senate President Bukola Saraki of all allegations of false asset declaration.

The Nigerian government filed 18 counts of false and anticipatory asset declaration charges against Mr Saraki in 2015.

All the counts collapsed at the Code of Conduct Tribunal in 2017, and the government again appealed the ruling.

The Court of Appeal upheld all but three of the charges, returning them to the Tribunal for retrial.

Mr Saraki’s legal team contested the verdict of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal at the Supreme Court, arguing that Mr Saraki had no case to answer.

The Supreme Court in its verdict Friday said the Court of Appeal panel engaged in “forensic somersault” when it held that Mr Saraki should answer three of the charges.
