Welcome to the last edition of What’s On In West Cork for 2025.
With the festive season rapidly approaching the excitement in the air is manifest. There is a wealth of entertainment over the Christmas period in our region. Live At The Bay in The Maritime Hotel, Believe Christmas at the Clonakilty Model Village.

The Four Alls and The Pike Bar are jointly holding a 2 Pubs event with plenty of music on Tuesday 23rd December. The Sam’s Cross Christmas Market at the Four Alls on 14th December promises to be a lively event, definitely one for the diary.

Casey’s Bar and Restaurant in Clonakilty have a great Christmas line up – 27 acts in a row. There are also numerous charity events taking place. McCarthy’s Bar, Drimoleague are holding a Cheval Ride on 26th December in aid of Bantry Hospital Palliative Care. The Pike Bar has a Remembrance Tree with a donation going to the local Rapid Response and the Kinsale & District Lions Club has just launched its 2025 Christmas Toy Appeal.

Our history consultant, Michelle O’Mahony Rocks Around The Christmas Tree with the rocking horse and other Christmas favourites.

After the festive period is all over and we enter a gloomy period of nothingness, why not plan a sunshine break. David Caldwell extols the virtue of a visit to the impressive city of Marrakech.

Dunmanway Historical Association has just launched their largest publication - Pictorial Past of Dunmanway, Volume 10.

This is a collection of photographs telling the story of festivals, family occasions, school days, sports events. They preserve the history, culture and memory of the past. This collection of photographs will evoke emotions, chatter, questions as the who when where, and maybe the odd argument!

Dr Mervyn O’Driscoll, Senior Lecturer and former head of the School of History, UCC, who launched the book said, “These images tell the story of the way of life in a pre-digital age. They are more than a documents of the past, they bridge a gap between generations”. This publication should prove to be an ideal Christmas present for our friends at home and abroad, affording them a glimpse of a piece of Dunmanway, thus starting endless conversation among our exiles.

Tommy Collins, Secretary of the Association said. "This unique collection of photographs is bound to stimulate memories of faces and places. With every photo comes a story; some tell tales of adventure and travel, some tell tales of milestones and memories, and many tell stories of family events, schooldays, class reunions, births, marriages and deaths".

This latest publication is available at the Dunmanway Heritage Centre and in all retail outlets in the town.

It is hard to believe that twelve months have elapsed and here we are with the 2025 edition of A West Cork Christmas.

As I write this, we are enjoying an unseasonably mild November but despite this now is the time to start planning for a simply great Christmas. Bandon Vet, Gavin Russell provides some useful tips for anyone thinking of buying a puppy for Christmas. Remember puppies grow up, dogs have to be exercised in bad weather and you have them for life and not just a Christmas novelty.

As the jumps season gathers momentum, it is interesting to talk with Dunmanway jockey, Gavin Sheehan who is now riding in the UK.

We have competitions for you to enter and festive recipes to try. Michelle O’Mahony, History Consultant indulges in some Christmas nostalgia with an article on toys of yesteryear.

After all the excitement of Christmas, banish the winter blues! David Caldwell takes you through a trip to Malaga – The Gateway to the Costa Sol, which is easily accessible from Cork Airport.

The team at WO Media & Publishing would like to wish you and yours the compliments of the season.

Welcome to the November edition of What’s On In West Cork.

In this publication we advertise a fair bit of entertainment in the lead up to Christmas. The Model Village is selling tickets for Believe Christmas. This year the Panto at The Everyman is Cinderella which promises to be a glittering, fun filled show.

Our local pubs offer some great entertainment in November. Casey’s Bar & Restaurant lists its music for the whole month. The Pike Bar continues with its popular Sunday Trad Sessions and the Four Alls hosts a comedy event on 14th November. Live By The Bay in Bantry lists its upcoming entertainment.

Our readers may be aware that we publish a sister magazine Irish Foodie, the WO Media team here would like to congratulate Darina Allen on receiving an honorary doctorate from MTU.

Ireland’s reinvention since the days of the “Celtic Tiger” as a manufacturing country with high GDP, a Balance of Trade and Budget Surplus has been transformational. Ireland's success as a country being proudly part of the European Union is shown in its GDP figures but also in many other indicators. Balance of Trade and Budget Surpluses, success in attracting FDI as the only English speaking country in the EU, Educational standards, highest life expectancy in EU, the size of the manufacturing sector and it being a country people want to live in and feel positive about as demonstrated in the World Happiness Index and other measures.

Welcome to the latest edition of What’s On In West Cork.

What a cracking summer for 2025, it gave us all a chance to get active and enjoy the great outdoors.

As I write this there are some heavy showers reminding us that we are coming into low season.
It is back to school or college, the festivals have finished and our nights are getting a bit longer and cooler. Perhaps it is a good time to take up a new hobby!
