KEVIN HEHIR has the distinction of becoming the first Inagh/Kilnamona to captain and manage the club to glory in the U21A hurling championship.

“Over the last couple of months and years in Inagh/Kilnamona we’ve had a couple of losses in close games that were hoping to close out, winning is a habit and losing is a habit so it is nice to stem the tide and get back winning those close games which we had done previously maybe seven or eight years ago and maybe we had lost recently, it is nice to win a game like that instead of losing them all the time," he told The Clare Echo.

BUDDY McMahon’s role in securing employment for generations in Shannon and captaining one of the county’s greatest hurling teams was hailed as he was laid to his eternal rest this week.

Newmarket-on-Fergus native Buddy worked for forty two years in the historic sales and catering section of Shannon Airport, beginning not long after Dr Brendan O’Regan created the world’s first-duty free shop.

On the hurling field, he was corner back and captain of the Newmarket-on-Fergus side to win three Clare SHC titles in a row in 1963, 1964 and 1965. He finished his playing career with five senior championships before moving into management and was involved as the club won its first ever Munster senior club championship in 1967, they retained the provincial title a year later.

DISCUSSION and concern is brewing in Ballyea over the vulnerability faced by road users.

A submission made by a group of Ballyea residents to the Ennis local transport plan to extend the pathway and cycle lane beyond Edenvale to Kilmorane Hill on the N68 Kilrush Road to the turn off for Ballyea was rejected, as the area was deemed to be outside the area covered by the plan.

“There is a lot of discussion and concern in Ballyea about this dangerous situation," said Chairperson of the Ballyea Community Text Alert, Pat Meaney.

A HOST of suitable sites have been put forward by Clare County Council to the HSE as potential locations for a new hospital in the county.

To strengthen the case for the construction of a new hospital in Co Clare, the County Council has engaged directly with the HSE property division regarding its list of potential sites.

Communities in North and West Clare continue to experience “unacceptable wait times” when it comes to health care, Cllr Rita McInerney (FF) stressed. Changes need to be introduced on a short to medium term to improve health services in the county, she added. “We all need that service and in a rural area, we will push for it as much as possible, we will do our part and won’t be found wanting”.
