Sad news from Ballinrobe 🕯️

A woman in her 80s has died following a road traffic collision in Ballinrobe, Co Mayo last Thursday.

The pedestrian was struck by a car on Glebe Street at around 4.20pm. She was taken to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar with serious injuries, and has since passed away.

Gardaí are continuing to appeal for witnesses. Anyone who was in the area of the N84 / Glebe Street between 3.50pm and 4.50pm on Thursday, or who has dash-cam footage, is asked to contact Claremorris Garda Station on (094) 9372080, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

The Irish show jumping team has secured Olympic qualification after finishing seventh at the FEI World Championships in Aachen.

There’s a Galway connection too, with Shane Sweetnam’s mount James Kann Cruz bred in County Galway.

🌲 A major restoration plan is being developed for Merlin Woods following the damage caused by Storm Éowyn.

Galway City Council is progressing plans to replant damaged areas with native woodland, while protecting biodiversity and the resident red squirrel population.

More than 54% of the woodland remains intact, with proposals also including new trails, seating, signage and an outdoor classroom if funding is secured.
