Tips for Designing Your Virtual Conference or Seminar

1. MC. Very important to have the right MC to move things along and if the MC and the Tech are in synch that’s one of the main the keys to smooth delivery of the event. An ability to go with the flow and have a bit of a sense of humour are always good here and is the hallmark of any decent MC. They don’t always have to be subject mater experts, particularly for any public facing stuff.

2. RECORDING. Have at least a majority of talks prerecorded and then have the speakers join live for panel/QA is the other main driver of a smooth event. Takes a huge amount of stress off and precludes a lot of technical difficulties. Brilliant in keeping the schedule on track too.

3. VIRTUAL is not an online copy of the real world. Less is more online. Shorter punchier talks works best. 20 mins is about right as people’s concentration level are different in front of screens. Also shorter sessions.. 0900 - 1700 is a slog, so consider longer breaks and if wanting to go all day do 3 shorter sessions instead of 2, which give folks a chance to go off and do a few things. Then build in mini-breaks of 10 mins or so with those sessions to give folks a chance to get up from their desks for a minute, grab a cuppa or whatever.
