For today. Or was it yesterday? It’s a work in progress anyway!

Solstice

The light has put away its tools and left
the grave of day half dug.

On the horizon
the spattered blood of sea and sky’s collision.

The porch light flickers on–
a warning or a welcome.

A table, a glass, a book, some jazz, some tears;
My life a fire set but not yet lit.

Young apples sweeten in the deepening blue,
dreaming of blossom-time and a bee’s kiss.

Under a gibbous moon a late train rumbles
through fields pale as a
clockface, its hands meeting at midnight,

Each carriage a flash of steel,
and a sliver of black
like the brief space between these two days.

I read a poet’s words I thought still lived;
find out she died a week ago,
while one I thought died young lives on.

Alone in their graves the living or the dead
give nothing in return for our belief.

What can they promise but that the coming dawn
will be the earliest of the year,

The light will show up once again, clock in,
and get to work.
