Total enjoyed presenting The Genealogy Radio Show today interviewing my esteemed friend and colleague Kenneth Nicholls from UCC who will be joining me for the Summer season. Our show the Fascinating O'Briens - Legacies and Lineages provides a wealth of sources and information about the trickly pedigree lines of the O'Brien dynasty. From contracts, marriages, murders and feuds, the O'Brien legacy is an important one. Do take a listen, we value your support for our community-produced show from Raidio Corcabaiscinn in beautiful Kilkee in County Clare -

Irish Girls and Boys Names through the Ages
Would it surprise you to know that there are less than two hundred boys named Sean in the 1911 Irish Census? We take Irish first names for granted, presuming that they never change but indeed they do with dramatic and subtle transitions and influences throughout the ages.. We need to note when names are taken from ancestors and where they deviate and how this naming pattern repeated gives us vital clues as to our families lineages. Our show explores Irish Boys and Girls names through the ages and some of the influences on Boys and Girls names in Ireland..
Learn how pilgrimage influence naming patterns and how moving from the Irish language to English transitioned names such as Eibhlin, Evelyn to Eileen. The name Eileen grew in popularity from the time of the 1911 census. Denis can also be seen to emerge for Donnchad or Donnacha and we can see how language influences naming patterns.
The top boys names today do not reflect the top names a century ago.
Sean.
Oisin.
Callum.
Michael.
Aiden.
Finn.
Shane.
Seamus.
It is surprising to hear that there were just 151 boys named Sean in the 1911 census. Two names Oisin, Callum only appear as a surname. There are however 139,119 boys named Michael. Almost 500 Boys with the name Aidan or Aiden for Ireland and 28 boys named Finn.69 Boys were named Shane in 1911 and 332 named Seamus.
