Thursday night sees our last film of the season, the mesmerising PERFECT DAYS, featuring Hirayama (Kōji Yakusho), a public toilet cleaner in Tokyo who lives a simple structured life, and a passion for rock music.

The script written by Wim Wenders and Takuma Takasaki was nominated for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards, becoming the first film not directed by a Japanese filmmaker to be nominated as the Japanese entry.

The story of how the film came into being is fascinating. Wenders was invited to Tokyo to observe the The Tokyo Toilet, a project in which Japanese public toilets were redesigned in 17 locations throughout Shibuya with the help of 16 creators invited from around the world. At first, the producers envisioned Wenders would make a short film or series of short films on the facilities, but he opted for a feature film, with co-screenwriter Takuma Takasaki explaining that the conception of the character of Hirayama felt like new territory for them. The sound track is fab too.

Thank you for coming to The Reel Room last night, great to see the new faces.

The Zone of Interest was certainly thought provoking and heavy cinema inviting us to consider lots of hard questions.

Our next film is in 2 weeks, 13th June and it is calm and contemplative in mood. Perfect Days, by Director Wim Wenders, features a Japanese janitor and his take on life, finding joy and beauty in everyday living. Here here. Hope to see you then. In the meantime enjoy the sun whilst it shines.

The Zone of Interest is a 2023 historical drama film written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis.

1943 sees Rudolf Höss, (Christian Friedel) commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) and their five children live in an idyllic home next to the camp.

Director Jonathan Glazer adopted a clinical approach focusing on the mental accommodations made by the couple to ignore the horrors on their doorstep. The chilling power of the film is how it contrasts the mundane lives of the family with the devastating use of sound and the occasional background glimpses of the camp.

Glazer wished to make a film that demystifies the perpetrators of the Holocaust, which he noted are often portrayed as "almost mythologically evil". He sought to tell the story of the Holocaust not "as something safely in the past", but "a story of the here and now".
